Wadi Hafla

by Abdel Hazim

Abdel Hazim came across Sudanese music during his travels through Sudan and Egypt. Oudplayer Sadig Shiakh Eldin Gibril from Omdurman (Khartum) plays ud on 6 of the 7 tracks. His distinct style and sound made "Wadi hafla" an exceptional album.

With Ananta on trumpet (Gotan project, La Sieste du Dromadaire, The Scene, Ibrahim Ferrer), Iris Thissen on cello (Aranis, Scarabee, Issa Sow, Sweet coffee, Blunt) and Sadig Shiakh El-Din Gibril on oud, Abdel Hazim composed with "Wadi hafla" his most 'classic oriental' album up to now. Recorded and mastered in one of the most famous recording studios in Belgium, the ACE Studio the music is less fusion and tribal but nevertheless still has the magical Abdel Hazim touch. Perhaps the most fusion track is "Tahia Carioca in blue", bossa-nova jazz on a Chaleezji beat. Il faut le faire... Tadaru starts with a slow rembetica 9/8 beat but transforms into a beledi rhythm. Last track of the album - Raks Maxum - suits as a drumsolo for advanced dancers. Although Abdel Hazim's less experimental album, the music is still full of hidden surprises. Enjoy!
