Malevolence Records – 2012 European Tour Sampler (2012) Various Artists

Posted April 1st, 2012 by Dark Emperor

Album Reviews
Symphonic Metal
Thrash Metal

In an action packed sampler, today we have Malevolence Records “2012 European Tour Sampler” featuring 4 different bands and two tracks each, a new one and an older one. With a nice spread of different musical genres (Thrash Metal and Melodic Death/Black Metal) this release is quite entertaining and shows promises for the upcoming releases of bands like KAOS and Septic Christ.

Tracks one and five belong the American Thrash Metal act KAOS. Their brand of high-octane Thrash Metal was greatly received with their last release titled “Pits of Existence” from which “Let God Sort Them Out” comes from. The new track “Infernal Bleeding” continues where the band left off and delivers super guitar work and excellent drumming. The vocals are pretty standards and aggressive enough to keep fans of ‘more brutal’ genres interested. This track has a nice melodic edge to it and we can only hope their upcoming release “Validated in Blood” is as good as this song.

Absentia from Spain provides us with songs two and six. We have earlier this year reviewed their latest release “Our Bleeding Sun” and this is where their first track comes from. With their perfect blend of Melodic Death/Black Metal, this band’s music is top notch. The track we haven’t heard from their “Heaven Still Burns” release from 2009 shows how the band’s sound has greatly matured since then, but makes up for a very engaging Melodic piece that has an old-school vibe.

Pummeling through two excellent Thrash Metal tracks, Septic Christ delivers some of the best songs in this sample with “Yearning for Salvation” and “Wake Up”. This Germany Thrash has a very well-defined 80’s bay area sound as their riffing and song structures clearly show. The catchiness of “Yearning for Salvation” is very effective and made us write down the band’s name to look for their upcoming album in the future. “Wake Up” delivers a more straight-forward approach with high similarities to bands like Kreator and Death Angel, but with a little bit less punch than their first song.

The last two tracks belong to T.C.F, a band from the Netherlands that plays a hybrid of Thrash Metal with some Hardcore elements. Their two tracks are the shortest ones of this release and quite frankly not to our full liking. “An Eye For an Eye” has that punk-ish edge that some people might enjoy, but for us is just not engaging enough. The even shorter “Core 88” has more meat on the guitar work, and sounds bit more like old-school Thrash metal, making it out of their two songs our ‘favorite’ one.

As this sampler indicates, the band’s playing at Metal Over Oostrozebeke festival on July 7th, 2012 will provide a great show due to their musical abilities. This sampler also gives you a nice insight into 4 bands that are making some nice music and should be heard. If you are a fan of Thrash Metal, this release should be of your interest since more than half of the tracks are pretty good for this genre standards.

The Malevolence Records is a small label that is step by step creandosi the roster, with this release-sampler, which contains eight pieces, two for each team within your reality, presents a view of the European tour that will involve. The tracklist reveals that the names are almost all known to listen to those who follow Aristocracy from the beginning, opening with "Internal Bleeding" thrash violently and adorned with traits "core" of the old school veterans KAOS. The trace output as a single and forerunner of the new ep "Validated In Blood" confirms the effectiveness of the proposal on the combo, heavy and massive, it is added to "Let God Sort Them Out" extracted from the preceding chapter, the full-length "The Pits Of Existence". Second in order of appearance is the sound of black / symphonic Spaniards Absentia, first with "If Only I" belongs to the latest release, "Our Bleeding Sun", also included in our database, and subsequently around the longest, "A Kiss From Hellheaven "dating back to the debut of "Heaven Still Burns". The difference between the two is clear, with the latter very immature especially from the point of view of production. We return to thrash with the Teutonic Septic Christ of "Yearning For Salvation", the sound begins softly and caressingly driven by a single melodic trickery, the departure rate is around the corner and the roots of the sound-Exodus Anthrax They come out disruptive. The piece is part of the new album "Guilty As We Were Born" and "Wake Up" is one of the tow tracks from the first album "Infected Existence" to which the undersigned is particularly fond of because it was one of the first online reviews submitted by the Aristocracy, 2009. Rounding out the games T.C.F. (Thrash Core Fanatics), which is clearly explanatory monicker on the choices of sound and the direction taken by the formation of the songwriting, the Dutch arrived ear with "An Eye For An Eye" extrapolated from "Where Madness Reigns", the debut of 2011, and "Core'88" ep including the 2009 "Speed Or Bleed". Nothing new but definitely geared to meet the demand of those living pleasantly "trapped" in the eighties. "Over Oostrozebeke Metal" is a showcase of what the show will reserve its Belgian participants and this release is ultimately just a taste, an invitation to try, if not already knew, the bands will alternate on that stage . Around so the ball to you dear readers, and perhaps you become part of your audience

#2. AbsentiA – Our Bleeding Sun (2011)

Metal To Infinity

Ready to swallow some good old fashioned Symphony Black / Death Metal? Stay and read my words on the new album entitled “Our Bleeding Sun” from Spanish based quartet AbsentiA. Formed in 2004 by singer / guitarist Julian Diaz and keyboardist David Barrientos – both brothers were hooked on Black Metal in the beginning, they even shared this form of music while playing in a band. Still searching for a real musical identity, finally they found a sound they were looking for. The name AbsentiA was born, created a debut album called “Heaven Still Burns” in 2009 and hit the road as support for The Haunted and Forever It Shall Be on their Spanish Tour! More acts AbsentiA played with are Brainstorm, Avulsed, Darksun, Sound Of Silence and more!

I’m not a natural born Death or Black Metal maniac, not even close actually but this band’s new album “Our Bleeding Sun” has quite a lot to offer. I have to be honest about that! I hear great compositions featuring outstanding guitars giving me many moments of pleasure. All those melodic riffs and beautiful solo works are tremendous. The symphonic Death / Black Metal feel always lurks from behind and actually doesn’t bother me for one single moment. Due to I’m not a worshipper of bands like Dimmu Borgir, Sheitan, Dissection, Immortal, Cradle Of Filth and stuff, AbsentiA knows how to keep my attention optimal. This band is able to play a perfect combination of very extreme parts alternating with nice melodic and especially highly appreciating, technical guitar moves. I hear moments of honest melancholy those flirting with dark moments and other some kind of emotional soundscapes… it all works out contagious to me. Songs like ‘The End Of The Line’, ‘Portrait Of A Soul’ illustrates what I mean about that.

Honestly spoken, I definitely don’t consider myself as a specialist in extreme Metal music but I goddamn know what good worked out songs (no matter the style of music) offered by well skilled players are all about. As for AbsentiA, there is no doubt possible they’re really good in what they deliver to the Symphonic Death / Black Metal community. They’re maybe an unknown band for some of you out there but forget a bout that, AbsentiA is that strong enough they can compete with other so called Top acts within this type of Metal music. Genre: Death Metal (Symphonic, Blackened, Melodic, Death, Gothic, Metal)

Rating: 10/11

Upon the arrival of this CD in the mail via Michelle Murray, I had no idea of the impact this would eventually have on me. At first I though it would be a pretty good band playing some melodic death metal very similar to so many others, but aside from a song or two, nothing really outstanding. While the style may be a staple in today's extreme music, the bands effort and conviction shines through as if they had been inspired to create something honest and true and reflecting themselves and of their soul. They have done just that ... they have managed to compact a large amount of beauty and the beast into 40+ minutes of playing time. To be able to feel the music speaks volumes for me, sometimes aggressive music can lose all emotion and have no sense of direction other than the aggressive nature itself, which is fine, but when you can add an element of mood to embrace the beast, it goes a long way in heightening the experience.

Our Bleeding Sun offers up 9 tracks of pure dramatic aggression in the form of musical art. Saturated with poetic passages about life and death, quoting the likes of Oscar Wilde and Norman Cousins, this work of art feeds the dark soul that lives within us all and yet allows us to feel the attentiveness of a sadder moment. Like the reading of a great poem, the music of Absentia's Our Bleeding Sun provides the same highs and lows, intertwining many forms of expression both dark and bright. It's very easy to get caught up in the melodies and simply feel as if you are floating away. Sounds soft I know, but great music will do that to you and for me and my view this is some great music. In essence this offering is of top caliber and shines a light on a band that should be in everyone's up and coming list. I know everyone is not a fan of this type music ... Epic soundscapes, soothing orchestrations, spiritual harmonies, harsh vocals backed with driving rhythms, heavy guitars and amazing solos, drum patterns fitting for a king, poetic like lyrics ... melodic meets extreme aggression.

What more can I say?, I could go through a song by song review, but I don't think my words can do them justice. I could give a few songs as highlights, but they are all of equal impact. You can pull any song and find it to be a stronghold or you can leave them in place and listen to them as a unit and as an expression and experience. Our Bleeding Sun should be a strong consideration for album of the year. We all have our opinions, but if you like symphonic blackened death metal, this should not disappoint you one bit. Again this is just a great album!

Absentia are a band that hail from Oviedo (Asturias) Spain ... with two full length albums. "Heaven Still Burns", their debut and "Our Bleeding Sun" their latest. This is a band that have immense talent and will find a lasting future on new horizons.

You may have read my review of Perseverance, last years Malevolence Records Euro tour compilation. Well this one is from 2012 and features the four bands listed above. Kaos open things with the swift acting thrash attack that is Internal Bleeding from their Validated in Blood EP, a savage opening complete with rampant riffs, frenetic drumming and the attitude soaked vocals of a man whose raw style hints at a band who lay it all on the line! Absentia and their track If Only I follow with their more symphonically fused melodic style of hard riffs meets ambient undertone! fast paced and nicely flowing, Absentia add something different to this thrash fest of a compilation! Yearning for Salvation is the opening offering of thrashers Septic Christ and they don’t just fly in half cocked. Soaring guitar solos, bass heavy tones and the slow, anticipation build up of a band who know how to thrash but also know how to entertain. besides once they unleash, boy do they unleash! Completing this half of proceedings is another thrash titan T.C.F. and their An Eye for an Eye track from Where Madness reigns which sees the band come into things with brute force and short stab of old school thrash dominance!
On the downhill slope now and Kaos return with the savage Let God Sort The Out, one of their most aggressive anthem like tracks from arguably their best release overall, The Pits of Existence! Absentia, a band I feel is out of place but none the less making a powerful showing here finish their participation with another flowing, surging track, A Kiss from Hellaven before Wake Up from Septic Christ delivers another lethal dose of in your face thrash barbarity and T.C.F’s Core 88 end things the only way a good compilation should end, mired in the old school!
