“A Handful of Stars” is a most apt description of baritone saxophonist Adam Schroeder’s debut release as a leader. Having assembled a hard-swinging and sublimely sensitive quartet of John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, and rising star guitarist, Graham Dechter; the quartet weaves through little-known gems by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Neal Hefti, and Quincy Jones. Spotlights on Schroeder’s originals and the arranging talents of Gerald Clayton and Josh Nelson add a vibrant taste of zest to the listener.
