ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
AKILI NI MALI (Knowledge is golden)-- MARCH 2017: Blues--the music of our mothers. These same melodies have been sung for many years with the African slaves who were brought to America. My style is based on African traditional Mijikenda blues from my homeland on the Indian Ocean in Kenya.

Blues is the music of our mothers, from their haunting lovely melodies. This solo acoustic album featuring Afro-acoustic blues--a fusion of the Delta blues and Ali Farka Toure-style rhythms wrapped up in down-to-earth, traditional melodies and riffs that will inspire visions in your mind, delivered through the stripped-down sounds of guitar, vocals, and small percussion instruments.

AKILI NI MALI
TRACKS:

1.BABA KIONJO
Baba Kionjo, your beautiful daughter and I are in love. I’ll be sending my parents to meet you, and to arrange for us to be married. Then they’ll come back to bring the dowry and you’ll arrange for the marriage date. Shower us with your blessings and love, bless our wedding day. No medicine can cure me except her love! She is the love of my life.

2.AKILI NI MALI
If you need money, go and work for it! A good education leads to wealth. If you want a luxurious life, go and find a job and make money. If you want nice shoes, go and work. If you have debts, work them off. They say the visitor is welcomed with a big celebration and feast on the first day, but if you stay too long, you’ll get a kick out the door into the street. Get out there!

3.MWAJUMA ANA
When children play together, there are always incidents, but you shouldn’t go after your neighbours for that. When they fight or misbehave, teach them kindly. There’s no need for hate between us as parents. Why did you throw my “kata” (a cloth head wrap worn when carrying firewood or water) in the well?

4.KO TIMBONI
At the quarry, the sun is very hot, people work under very harsh conditions with no protection, no security or insurance. You have to have your eyes open all the time—others may steal what you have quarried and you have nothing to show for all your hard work. Nothing left for your family!

5.NENDA MDZINI
I’ve lived in the city for a long time, but now I think it’s the right time for me to go back to the reserve to care for my farm. It’s almost harvest season, I’ve planted and planted, and some of my crops were infested—hopefully my harvest will be plentiful. I’m ready to head back to the farm!

6.SIMA NA NGURU
Through music and plentiful feasts, we pass our stories on, stories that keep our culture and traditions alive through the generations. When good, healthy food is cooked well, praises are heaped upon the cooks and the meal is celebrated.

7.MAMBA LEO
Today’s truth: Little by little fills the bucket; one plus one is two; two mouths equal two plates. Family planning is a wonderful thing; getting pregnant should not be an accident and should be taken seriously. Ten mouths equal ten plates.
