Album Notes

Adele M. Wilding Trio Releases Bruce Cockburn’s ‘Shepherds’ for Christmas 2016

The idea to cover the Bruce Cockburn song ‘Shepherds’ was conceived during one of many road trips across the Canadian Prairies. “Dusk is my favorite time of day, especially when I travel. The Prairies make for an inspirational backdrop at dusk: vast fields, multicolored skies, the sun setting quietly in the West...and the phrase ‘Gloria in Excelsis’ ringing out into the night...’In the Falling Dark’.”, explains Adele M. Wilding, quoting the title of the 1976 album by Bruce Cockburn. “I was already familiar with the 1993 version of ‘Shepherds’, but it was the 2002 re-release (of this song) that captured my heart.”

In November 2016, Wilding assembled two of Vancouver’s pre eminent jazz artists to record ‘Shepherds’: pianist Dan Reynolds and double bassist Marcos Flo (a member of Reynolds’ jazz trio). Struck by his vision for the recording, Wilding additionally assigned Reynolds as co producer of ‘Shepherds’. Reynolds began internalizing percussion parts for the track, and his versatile drummer, Adam Cormier, was hired for the recording.

This interpretation of ‘Shepherds’ combines a contemporary jazz groove with the rich and thoughtful vocal interpretation of Adele M. Wilding. The single is being released for Christmas 2016.

Wonderful take on a Canadian classic
Jazz is a wonderful mix of tradition and creativity. One of the great carols in the Canadian songbook is Bruce Cockburn’s ‘Shepherds’ and this contemplative take on it is truly stunning. I’ve known all of these musicians for quite a while. But this is the first time they have come together. I hope this collaboration continues long into the future. I had the privilege of listening in on the recording session at Brentwood Presbyterian Church in Burnaby, BC. I was struck by the power of all the musicians and the blend they achieved in this piece, listening so carefully to each other, adding their unique strengths to the feel for this arrangement of the song, and singing/playing with great sensitivity and soul throughout. This group brings to life the soundscape of the ‘figures dancing in the sky clothed in more colours than the world can contain’ in a new and truly moving way. Listen and you will be encountered afresh by the Spirit of this blessed season.
