ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Neo-Classical Seventh Symphony in F sharp minor ("Hyperion") is inspired by the old Romanian myth of the Morning Star, as made famous by Eminescu's masterpiece poem about aspiration towards what is beyond and above, in relation to personal wishes and feelings.
The work is cyclical and its themes, based on ancient Romanian carols, confront with each other and evolve in all four movements with a great deal of development, representing the main characters in the legend: the Princess longing for Hyperion's love but unable to reach him (in the first movement), Hyperion ready to give up of his immortality and genius for her love (in the first and third movements), the Creator denying him such passing realization (towards the ending of the third movement), and the page who gives her amorous fulfillment (in the second movement and introduction to the fourth), while Hyperion returns to his eternal state (in the main section of the finale, Allegro maestoso).

"Thoughts and Images", in this version as a suite for violin and piano in D major, is an arrangement of a song cycle on poems by the same Eminescu. The moods of the songs/movements vary, ranging from irony ("The Album", "I Watch the City") and nostalgia ("Years Have Trailed Past", "Ode in Ancient Meter") to serene and appeased contemplation ("Stars in the Sky", "Vainly in the Dust of Schooling"). The musical language is mostly restrained and intimate, with many colorful chords and a few harsh and somber outbursts.

The Sonata for trumpet and piano in B flat, dedicated to the American trumpet player Robert Chambers, is a compact composition with a light Postmodern touch, developing well-known American tunes in its outer movements and a ritualistic Romanian carol in its central, repetitive movement, as a gesture of international friendship.
