Album Notes
The historical instruments used in most of these recordings (Erard 1922, Pleyel 1926) provide more colorful timbres and a clearer lower range, and are used through Modartt's Pianoteq Stage, as well as the flagship concert grand Steinway D (first built in 1884), which was used in "Sacred Metamorphoses"..
Piano Sonata No. 2 in D minor (1998) is a dramatic, complex composition with cyclical influences in its overall form and tightly knit motivic and polyphonic development, but with a touoch of humor in the second movement (Scherzo) and an extatic slow movement based on an ancient Romanian Christmas carol. Recorded on an Erard 1922 piano.
Sonata No. 3 in G major (2015), perhaps the better of the three sonatas presented here, is more restrained, subtly cyclical, more mature in style, poetic, whimsical, dreamy but also dramatic in the Finale. Recorded on a Pleyel 1926 piano.
Sonata No. 4 in D major (2018), a neo-classical work, in turn fiery, desolate and appeased, was first intended partly as illustration for the electronic edition of Roland Colton's historical novel "Forever Gentleman". Recorded on an Erard 1922 piano.
The diverse Ten Variations on the bass of the Aria from Bach's "Goldberg" Variations (2018) feature also some neo-baroque hints, plus allusions to the other great variation cycle, Beethoven's "Diabelli" Variations, and to Stravinsky's and Prokofiev's music, too. Recorded on an Erard 1922 piano.
Elegy (2017) and "For Claudette" (2018), two rather shorter, occasional pieces, were recorded on a Pleyel 1926 piano.
"Sacred Metamorphoses" (2012), a huge neo-romantic suite, explores contemplative themes from Symphony No. 3 by Saint-Saens. Each of its charac ter movements is also a huge variation on the themes, the whole being mostly nostalgic and almost mystical, like prayers without words. Recorded on a Steinway D piano and in a cathedral ambience.
