AEOLIAN ERGONAUTICS

The Art of Sailing Through One’s Work

Euripides Risiing by AEOLIAN KID was originally released on February 21, 1993. Only one
thousand copies were produced. It was originally mastered by Dr. Toby Mountain of NDR from a DAT tape produced by George Koumantzelis at Aeolia Recording Studio using cassette copies
of the digital 2-track DAT tape 48 kHz / 16-bit stereo master mixes of the first two songs on the album, Them Blues and Henry, instead of the original digital 2-track DAT tape 48 kHz / 16-bit stereo master mixes themselves. … Why? … Economics. At the time, I could only afford to buy one DAT recorder, and I really needed two in order to be able to make exact, digital transfers of songs from one recorder to another. I made do with what I could afford, and the music suffered. Also, many of the other songs that were recorded on stereo 2-track and 4-track analog cassette tapes were never properly cropped, compressed, equalized, limited, and normalized. All of that has now been corrected. Nevertheless, what has been corrected here (other than the first two songs, which were originally recorded on AMPEX 456 2 inch 16-track multi-track analog magnetic tape running at 30 inches per second) are the DAT mixes of all of the other songs after the first two on the album. This is not a true re-mastering in the true sense of the word of re-mastering from the original, analog cassette stereo 2-track mixes that were transferred to DAT tape. What really needs to be done one day is a true re-mixing and re-mastering direct to digital 2-track hard disc of the original analog cassette 2-track and 4-track tapes. Still, if you are one of the lucky few to own a copy of one of the original first thousand copies of the album (which dropped the word, AIERIE, from the title in the last days before pressing the CD’s), and you are familiar with the sonic character of that CD, and you now listen to this newly, remastered CD, you will most definitely be able to hear the difference in sound quality. All remastering was done using the ALESIS Masterlink digital stereo 2-track hard-disc recorder. I hope you enjoy this music anew!

All one thousand copies of that original album are now gone - either sold, given away to friends and musical collaborators, or mailed off to advertisers, radio stations, and record companies. The internet has now changed everything, and the world wide web is full of music from hundreds of thousands of independent and famous artists. One can simply go to any web site, stream audio, or - for a payment or subscription fee - legally download digital copies of music, text, and graphics of any album, record, or CD that you want to own and listen to under the “fair use” laws. This is all great. But, there is still nothing like buying a “real” record - album, tape, or CD - that you can buy from a store or from a mail-order company like amazon.com or CD Baby through the mail, and be able to hold that record in your hand, just like the good old days. I love vinyl, too, owning thousands of LP albums, but I will be the first one to admit that CD’s are far more convenient to listen to and carry around, sound damn good (way better than cassettes, old 8-track tapes, and MP3’s) and have become the musical medium of choice for most people. Nevertheless, the sonic quality of audiophile audio is far superior on the DVD audio discs that are recorded at 96 kHz / 24-bit. The ALESIS Masterlink records at this level of audio quality, and you can hear the difference. One day, all of these songs will be released in that format or in the new, 50 GB 192 kHz / 24-bit, Blu-ray disc format which I have read is even better sounding than that of the DVD audio, audiophile discs!

The original copy of the album included homemade liner notes and an ad for the CD on one side with an ad for a cassette of The Wamesit Jams #1 by THE BASEMENT BEATS on the other side. These were printed on goldenrod, photocopy paper, with photos, text, and an order form to buy more copies. I will try to make copies of this material and include it with these new liner notes for the re-mastered version of the album. I like some sentimental nostalgia, and it gives the listener and the reader an idea of how far we have come since the days of one stereo microphone and a SONY Walkman Pro stereo cassette recorder that recorded metal tapes using Dolby C noise reduction. What follows is some of the text from those original liner notes. To see all of it, you’ll have to look at the original folded pages themselves, included here for your pleasure. One last thing, in case you wondered why this musical CD is housed in a DVD case, it’s because of two reasons: the first is because all of these liner notes would not fit in a regular, small CD jewel case, and the second is that a DVD case is stronger plastic, does not break as easily, and stands out tall in a store rack! …

Far out!!
Yes!!! I listened to Aeolian Kid: Aierie:Euripides Rising remastered. Wow! The remastered version is amazing. So much better than the original CD. I am not a sound expert at all, but there were things in it I never heard in the original. Beautiful and expansive guitar solos, great vocals, trippy sound effects, excellent groove on all the tracks. Of course, the songs are great! I am in awe that you wrote those songs - they have such feeling and originality, as good as anything written by Neil Young or countless musicians we love.
I can tell that you all practiced those songs and took them to heart - the music just comes across as natural and real. It is a classic album. A real gem!!
