Album Notes
This recording project is a testament to a partnership and fellowship that began when Main Line Reform Temple joined with Zion Baptist Church of Ardmore PA to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. Soon after, Congregation Beth Am Israel of Penn Valley, PA joined in annual prayer and song to affirm our friendship, and our shared values of freedom, brotherhood (and sisterhood) and of working to build connections between our sacred communities.
James Pollard Jr of Zion Baptist and Hazzan Harold Messinger of Beth Am Israel set out to create a "Freedom Concert", an outgrowth of the Freedom Seders held between Zion and Beth Am. As song ideas were played around with, the two began reworking the 'traditional tunes' of Passover with those of the sacred spirituals and Gospel music of the Church. It was soon discovered that within each distinct tradition lay words, images and music that connect the two. Here then is a document of that effort, and of the incredible talents of the singers and musicians at Zion Baptist Church, Beth Am Israel and Main Line Reform Temple.
