Album Notes

"Sometimes in life you get to see, why you ran off the road so easily, you had to explore life on the side streets."

This line of verse from their song titled "Sometimes" sums up the path Mary Kate Connolly and Cheryl Newman have taken to arrive at this part of their destiny they have coined "aigeanta".

Mary Kate, originally from the New York area, has always had a passion for story telling and music. (especially the story telling as all who know her would attest to) However, her love of school and a childhood decision that she would attain a degree, led her to acquire several, the last being a Doctorate in Chiropractic. Degrees completed, she continued to listen to her biggest musical influences Stevie Nicks and Bruce Springsteen and contemplated putting her own thoughts to music. Mary Kate's challenge was the small detail of not knowing how to compose the music for her words.

Cheryl, a California native, was inspired early on by the music of Carole King and James Taylor. She states, "I was drawn in by their soothing melodies and the stories told within their verse." When she was twelve, an uncle gave Cheryl her first guitar that he had bought for her at Sears. She quickly learned a few chords and became an avid guitar player and composer in her own right. She went on to earn a degree in music always preferring however to write her "own style" rather than imitating others. Interestingly enough, as life always is, she took one of those side streets and landed (pun intended) in the world of aerospace for many years. She always held on to her love of music, continuing to mold and perfect her guitar skills.

In the fall of 1999 Mary Kate and Cheryl combined their talents and created their first song a sweet ballad titled "Summer Wind". Adopting the name of "aigeanta" (pronounced "ay-gee-en-ta") a Gaelic word meaning "spirited", this duo started playing their music out and about. Today they are becoming regulars on the southern California acoustic music scene, performing a myriad of material from their collection of over 50 original works.

Their music has been described as "eclectic folk rock" however that is only part of the picture. Weaved within the folk and the rock you will hear a little jazz and blues rounding out the fabric of their performances.

The summer of 2003 has brought forth aigeanta's debut CD titled "In the moment". This twelve song collection highlights the eclectic style of this group. Ranging from the mystical upbeat first track "Well Hello" to the hauntingly intense ballad "Storm" to the quirky lounge sounding "The Third Time", this CD is an entertaining mix of many paths blending into one.

Heart-felt, hot new sound
The cd is great, I play it almost daily! The rock style songs with both musicians singing are my favorite, especially Wind Changes and Rose Pedals in Winter. A must listen for all acoustic lovers.
