ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Performed by flutist Ai Goldsmith and pianist Miles Graber, Les exquises Allégories (The Exquisite Allegories) is an exploration of rare compositional gems for the flute and piano by Walter Gieseking and Carl Frühling, a contemporary work by Grigory Smirnov, as well as a classic by Franz Schubert.

Ai Goldsmith wields her trademark purity of tone, varied tone colors, and captivating interpretations to create atmospheres that are suggestive and poetic, yet dramatic by turns, above Miles Graber’s warm, lush, and lyrical performance.  Fanfare Magazine's critic Dave Saemann writes, “Goldsmith is an especially communicative artist.  The Exquisite Allegories exhibits a flutist at the peak of her powers, bringing to life music as haunting as it is rarely heard.”  “The Exquisite Allegories at its best…is sheer poetry. Ai Goldsmith and Miles Graber have created a rich listening experience. Highly recommended” (Dave Saemann, Fanfare Magazine).

Fanfare Magazine's critic Jerry Dubins writes “…what we have here in this recital…is a highly unusual and really fascinating collection of works for flute and piano…” and “very strongly recommended.”

“Her playing on this album is characterized by a bright, open tone, tempered by an ultra-smooth legato, very clean and controlled tonguing, and exceptionally even transitioning between her instrument’s registers, all of which mitigates any tendency towards metallic shrillness or piping one sometimes encounters with the flute, and which contributes to a suave elegance of execution and sophisticated style of music-making that really suit and enhance these works. Beautifully done” (Jerry Dubins, Fanfare Magazine).

An excerpt from the CD notes:
The album’s title Les exquises Allégories (The Exquisite Allegories) refers mainly to the ability of instrumental music to evoke atmospheres and moods that are better felt than explained…just as imagery, allegory, and metaphors go beyond words to express the intangible and the inexpressible in poetry and prose. Les exquises Allégories is also a nod to the stylistic features of two of the works recorded here: Sonatine and Variations on a Theme by Grieg
by Walter Gieseking (1895-1956). These works conjure an illusive, suggestive, and poetic atmosphere achieved by shifts in tonal colors, moods, and indirect expression of emotions in a manner akin to the style of Symbolist poets such as Mallarmé, Verlaine, and Rimbaud.

Like Symbolist poetry, there are occasional absences of a clear classical narrative structure in the Sonatine and the Variations; the musical directions and moods shift unexpectedly in the middle of phrases and periods.  The work’s elusive beauty also depends upon elegant nuances of articulations, melodic figures, and sophisticated chord changes. In the Variations, Gieseking chose the Arietta from opus 12, no. 1 as a physical symbol of the intangible, the spiritual, and the emotional worlds. In so doing, Gieseking creates a rich emotional world for each variation, much like the manner in which poets use symbols and allegories to communicate additional layers of meaning beyond the text.
