Album Notes
Alexander Sakurov, one of the best Russian saxophone players, lives in a small town of Ivanovo not very far from Moscow. He first became famous for his pieces included in the DOCUMENT 8-CDs conpilation of the most interesting jazz musicians of Russia today which was released in Great Britain by LEO Reordsseveral yeats ago and which included recordings by Sergei Kuriokhin, the Ganelin trio, Anatoly Va[urov, the Arkhangelsk group, Guyvoronsky-Volkov duo, and others.
On the COSMOGONY album he is joined not only by the “SAROS” group which consists ofsome of the best session musicians of today's Russian jazz scene: Roman Petrov – electric piano, synthesizer, harmonica, Pavel Chekmakovsky – electric guitar, Igor Ivanushkin (from the Second Approach trio) - acoustic bass and Feodor Andreev - drums & percussion, but also by a workd-famous folk musician, singer and reeds player Segey Starostin. Sergey Starostin who is the nominee of the BBC World Music Awards 2003, and Alexander Sakurov create a jazz suite of magnificent, 'cosmic' proportions.
The rich sound of Sakurov's saxophone makes one think of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Gato Barbieri.
