THE GOD PERFUME
(a short philosophy)

In certain ancient cultures of the world old souls have been honored with a distinction: He/she possesses ´it´. THE GOD PERFUME. Such ones are of a simplicity of thinking, of an emotional depth. The beauty of the soul is theirs. The fulfilled Ones. Such a one knows, but does not speak, feels something but chooses an encrypted way of expression - you know, to keep the riff raff at a distance "It's like a perfume," people say. You follow these people, sniff around them, follow their trail.
So how do highly advanced souls recognize each other? It is a scent, a kind of vibration that one in a million will detect in another of their kind. And with music.

It is a subtle undercurrent, and that is how I wanted this composition THE GOD PERFUME to be: Dark, with a strong down tempo beat, with razor sitar statements. Again I had help, in that certain things in sound and melody, in rhythmic expression turned out as they did. You can´t dream that sort of thing up.
And my sitar sound is now as always wanted it to be – a kind of reward for decades of trying.

THE GOD PERFUME contains Christian elements, certain African ones, Indian, and futuristic. From the Age of The Ram, to that of The Fish, and on to The Universal Soul.

When you live in these complex times, and you feel that everything has been tried, and said, and fused, and expressed, and revived, then you start thinking that with all the songs and pieces and symphonies and albums and experiments, why attempt to contribute more to this tsunami? Well, first of all it was a good thing that one has found one´s own opening into another sphere, oh so many years ago – into another sphere of operation. So, in that way there was no competitive thinking.

As far as my work is concerned, I am an interior designer – I design interiors you can listen to. Some of them with a beat, other not – the importance lies in reaching a certain state. When I make music I am forever in a walled garden with bird song. It was always about a confined space, an ambience in its original sense. Somewhere one would feel one could get comfort. And from there go inward … and on from there to expand into a universal field.

I wanted the music of GOD PERFUME to take place in that peaceful walled garden. With Bulbul (Hindi: the nightingale) in it. How the first bird you hear in spring enchants you! That´s how I came to understand that after all the music we have heard in our time, what is left is to translate your favourite song onto another, a more subtle, a condensed, an abstracted level. And how that can bring one into a state of exquisite thoughtfulness, of a warm intimacy. A remembrance ... of where it´s at. Songs of child-like innocence, of the fragile gesture.
The title depicts a certain Indian sorcerer – a painting I did a few years ago.

Exquisite Fragrance of Thoughtful Music
Listen to the music by Al Gromer Khan - it's like you are entering Oriental palace somewhere farway and with each new composition a new door is opening for you. You are seeing wall paintings, ceilings, ornaments, you are smelling exotic and exquisite fragrance. It's journey into new unknown world. And in the same time it's journey inside yourself. To the better side of self.
Electronic keyboards and sitar. Do you think it's New Age? No. Don't listen to this music in your car or as to background sounds for your usual work. It's too serious and a bit dark. You'll sink into it. Different emotions, moods, colours, sounds, cultural traditions are woven together and carefully prepared for you by Al Gromer Khan.
Thoughtful music which gives you forces and ability to feel and to understand diversity of the world around us and to understand yourself much better.

A thrilling listening experience not to be missed!!!
Famous German instrumentalist, sitarist, composer and novelist Al Gromer Khan has released "The God Perfume" CDr during November 2017 through his Rasa Music label. The album comes in a 4-panel digipak, featuring on the cover art a painting by the Maestro himself.

The opener "God Perfume X" immediately sets oriental fragrance with piquantly serpentine sitar patterns and soothingly cadenced percussions, while cushions of ethereal chants are guarding above. Intangible voices sneak here and there. Pristinely titillating texture! "Bulbul" masterfully blends stringed exotica with calm organic subtleties. But the center stage is inconspicuously invaded by laid-back high-tech electronica, as much elusive as authentic, occasionally permeated by transient tribal fragments. Aural splendor, although rather shorter! "Beat Of The Ancients" keeps on ear-tickling, distant jazzy flavors commingle with sitar tapestries and translucently rattling halcyon glimpses soothe listener's ear and soul. Gossamery embracing ride!!! "Zu Meiner Seele Ehren" reveals with female chants, but soon nebulously infused sitar minimalism sneaks to the foreground with vaguely intense downtempos glimmering above. "A Way In The World", at 9:26 the longest track on the album, opens with remote choirs, but it's again the pellucid sitar moving to the core, then quickly metamorphosing into much quieter, celestially enveloping realms. "Procession For The Great Black Goddess" follows the contemplative path of its predecessor, before diving into uniquely colored sceneries, where sharper stringed vistas are continuously juxtaposed with mesmerizingly relaxed rhythm passages and calmly gliding meditative meridians. Balmily immersing! "Turandot" is as much lyrical and curlicue as transporting and serene. Shorter "Toledo" is propelled by filigree arrangements, meticulously bridging delightfully transcultural instrumentations. Pure magic!!! Brief "Odeon" attracts with its cinematic feel, enchantingly narrative and ambrosially expansive. Another beauty! "Blues For A Muted Sitar", the title speaks for itself on this piece, Al Gromer Khan's stringed virtuosity exquisitely merges with persistently opiating pace and distant quietudes. "Chaikhana" precisely blends sublime beauty of stringed brilliance with spaciously engrossing stratums, gracefully drifting choirs and glancing diaphanous traceries. Weeping bowed strings of "Wayco" navigate this album into its conclusion, when magnificently interacting with tranquilly floating blankets and dissonant fractions.

55-minute "The God Perfume" is a truly luminous jewel and after "Chakra Noir" album (April 2016) another milestone in Al Gromer Khan's extensively applauded discography. His electro-acoustic wizardry is always filled with infinite spirit, finesse and uniqueness. A thrilling listening experience not to be missed!!! Unfortunately, the aural perfection, including superb sound quality, is not justified by unstable duplicated CDr edition, so I hope in the future Al Gromer Khan will return again to a glass mastered format. "The God Perfume" album really deserves such format!!! The options nowadays are really wide at quite reasonable prices. And last but not least, in the meantime another three albums by Al Gromer Khan are available, "Sky Worship" (May 2018), "Durga Avenue" (November 2018) and the newest one entitled "In High Places", released during April 2019.

There is a dimension in music that is rarely explored, it hides behind the tick and tock of the relentless clock, it’s a highway hardly ever travelled that can only be found on the very borders of existence. True ambient music like this, fits those parameters with ease, it hovers with an intent so grand and yet unassuming, it creates an imagery for the soul, its gives us a brief scent of a reality called, The God Perfume.
There can be no doubt that Al Gromer Khan is the master of the ambient music genre, but here he is a director of interior sounds that demands to be listened too and with each stroke of the strings, the maestro manifests something that has never been heard before; this is genius in motion.
If you ever wanted to start an album with something so startlingly brilliant, then The God Perfume X would be the track you would choose, its ambience is so profound and immediately establishes a musical pattern so beautiful and alluring, it becomes addictive beyond reason. This piece has to be one, if not the best beginning to an album I have head for many years.
Bulbul is now upon us, this song bird of a composition blossoms like the midnight scent of a Jasmine flower, and floats upon the warm breeze of a late autumn evening. Bulbul (Nightingale) has a beauty that reaches into a myriad of musical dimensions; Gromer Khans performance is supreme in creating something so tranquil and serene here.
The plunging opening to Beat of the Ancients is outstanding. The movement is deep and insightful; it swirls back and forth in the mind’s eye like a desert wind in July. The shimmering intensity of this piece and the energy of its creation, breathes a certain resonance into the composition that is so appealing, so very tempting. The artist’s use of percussion here is powerful, but not ostentatious, and the entire arrangement has a deep sense of respect built into the composition.
On Zu Meiner Seele Ehren, we have a moment within time that peaks a spiritual interest, and an ethereal vocal that is so very imploring. Gromer Khan’s sitar is outer worldly on this piece, the production quality and bass here fashion a reality in music as of yet touched by human hands, this construct of tone and timbre is utterly sublime and honours the musical soul.
As we tread carefully toward the fulcrum of this release, we come across a piece that brings forth a perfect moment of meditative genius for us to sample, it’s called A Way in the World. This also is our longest offering at well over nine minutes long and allows us, the ever eager listener, a musical dimension to roam freely in, and one that is unfettered from the clutter of life’s illusions.
At the midway borderlands of this album, is a track called Procession for the Great Black Goddess. The combination of electronic mastery and sitar ushers forth another layer of ambience that changes tempo two minutes in, but never loses its coherence. The floating notes from Gromer Khans Sitar hover like an errant cloud on a summer’s day, one we watch, one we wait for that oh so subtle of movements, but in the end, like this arrangement, we become part of the music itself, and we are lost for ever more in blissful happiness.
It is a recognised fact that Gromer Khan is the grandfather of ambient music, but even in age the artist still improves, still keeps moving forward, and still reaches for that sublime perfection. Turandot is part of this labyrinth of excellence; it has a wonderfully melodic structure that is almost operatic in nature and most fulfilling in its narrative.
Toledo has a spacious European motif that is so redolent of the area, I have bathed in this piece for many listens, and each time I enjoy the experience more. There is so much within this track that is appealing, it is one that is painted musically with such skill, that one hardly notices that only just over one hundred and sixty seconds has passed.
Living in my location the next offering is all too familiar. Odeon is from the ancient Greek and means a place of performance of poetry and music, I have one literally ten minutes’ walk from my home, and this piece would make a superb soundtrack to play during my next visit. It has a truly haunting quality about its structure that draws us in further, and through the performance one may even see ghosts of the past, treading the stones of the Odeon in creativity.
We now find ourselves deep in the texture of the album as we arrive at the piece Blues for a Muted Star. There is a certain melodic essence about this piece that gives us a sense of retrospection, the performance here is guilt edged and manifests a land of pure ambience, layered within the blues.
The penultimate offering is called Chaikhana. If you ever wished to explore the vast realms of ambient music on offer, this would be the place to sojourn. Gromer Khan creates a dominion of peace from his performance that is only matched by the sheer vista of artistic atmospheric brilliance painted in music; this is an offering one could float in for eternity.
We now end our voyage of mood and tone within the musical sphere of Al Gromer Khan and The God Perfume, with a composition called Wayco. The slight elevation in energy allows us to part ways with the artist, completely fulfilled. Wayco once more opens the doors to our realm. allowing us a pathway back to our reality, once more contented and satisfied that we have listened to something that is above anything else we have listed to in this genre.
The God Perfume is Al Gromer Khans best work so far, the depth in composition, the quality of performance and production is unrivalled. Listening to this album is like stepping into a musical Eden itself. The God Perfume is not only Al Gromer Khans best work to date, but probably one of the best collections of ambient music ever in this genre, and one that I whole heartedly recommend without hesitation.
