ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Two of the most respected musicians in old-time music, Alice Gerrard and Beverly Smith have come together to create a seamless blend of duet harmonies in a wonderful collection of songs and tunes—some old, some new— on banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and guitar.

As one of the most respected musicians in old-time music today, Beverly Smith, living in Marshall, NC, is in great demand as a guitarist, singer and fiddler, as well as dance caller. A founding member of the Heartbeats with Tara Nevins, June Drucker and Rose Sinclair from 1985-1995; she was also a member of Big Hoedown with Bruce Molsky and Rafe Stefaninni. More recently she performed and toured for 10 years with Carl Jones, with whom she recorded 3 highly praised CDs, and with John Grimm with whom she recorded two CDs. She has recorded with artists like Irish musicians Mick Moloney and John Doyle, and bluegrass great Laurie Lewis, and has performed with many others including Art Rosenbaum, Brad Leftwich, Tom Sauber, Mac Traynham, and Rayna Gellert, Over the years she has taught and played at many camps and folk festivals throughout the world.

Alice Gerrard is a talent of legendary status. In a career spanning some 50 years, she has learned from, and performed with many of the old-time and bluegrass greats, earning worldwide respect for her own important contributions to the music. Alice is particularly known for a groundbreaking collaboration with Appalachian singer Hazel Dickens during the 1960s and ’70s. That duo produced four classic LPs (recently reissued by Rounder on CD) and influenced scores of young women singers. Her two solo albums on Copper Creek in 1995 and 2004, showcase her many talents: compelling, eclectic songwriting; powerful, hard-edged vocals; and instrumental mastery on rhythm guitar, banjo, and old-time fiddle. She has recorded with many artists including Tom Sauber and Brad Leftwich, Rayna Gellert, and Anna & Elizabeth, and has appeared on projects with traditional musicians including Tommy Jarrell, Enoch Rutherford, Otis Burris, Luther Davis and Matokie Slaughter. With in-depth knowledge of mountain music, she produced, or wrote liner notes for, a dozen other musicians. She also co-produced and appeared in two documentary films, and is the subject of another currently in production. In September 2017 Alice was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.
