Album Notes
This concert recording of the Allegheny College Wind Symphony under the direction of Lowell E. Hepler, a professor of music and chair of the Department of Music contains a broad range of music featuring pianist Douglas Jurs.

The program opens with “Panopticon” by Ralph Ford, followed by the beautiful arrangement of “Amazing Grace” by Frank Ticheli. Piano soloist Dr. Douglas Jurs joins the Wind Symphony for a performance of the first movement of Edvard Grieg’s “Piano Concerto in A Minor”. Associate Professor of Music Dr. Jennifer Dearden serves as guest-conductor for Grundman’s “Fantasy on American Sailing Songs”. The Allegheny College Wind Ensemble takes the stage next to perform Michael Gandolfi’s “Vientos y Tangos”.

The Wind Symphony returns, beginning with “Revival March”, a very early (1876) march by John Philip Sousa. Next you will hear a performance of “English Dances for Band” by Malcolm Arnold, arranged by Maurice Johnstone. This is followed by the first movement of H. Owen Reed’s monumental “La Fiesta Mexicana”; featuring an off-stage Mariachi band. The concert concludes with Steven Reineke’s “Into the Raging River”, a programmatic work based upon the Gauley River in the mountains of southern West Virginia.

Featured soloist and assistant professor of music Dr. Douglas Jurs, in his first year with the Allegheny music faculty has performed throughout North America, Europe, and beyond as a soloist and collaborative pianist. He holds degrees from Indiana University – Bloomington (where he double majored in English Literature and Piano), Cleveland Institute of Music, and the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

This recording is another in a series produced for Allegheny College by Chaffee Sound Productions.
