ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This concert recording of the Allegheny College Wind Symphony under the direction of Lowell E. Hepler, a professor of music and chair of the Department of Music, features performances by the 83 member Wind Symphony. Recorded Sunday November 18, 2018 in Shafer Auditorium.

The concert begins with “English Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughn Williams followed by “Of Ancient Dances” by Stephen Bulla, former chief arranger for the United States Marine Band. The Wind Symphony then performs a beautiful arrangement of “Amazing Grace” written by William Himes.

Featured euphonium soloist Jonathan Mendez then joins the symphony to perform Gardell Simons’ “Atlantic Zephys”. Jonathan is a double major in music and computer science at Allegheny College. He also performs with the Wind Ensemble, Civic Symphony, Jazz Ensemble and Brass Quintet.

The next piece, “Russian Christmas Music” is widely considered to be Alfred Reed’s masterwork for symphonic band. Steven Reineke’s “Pilatus, Mountain of Dragons” is a programmatic work based upon the legendary dragons of Mount Pilatus near Lucerne, Switzerland. The concert concludes with the rousing march “Frederick’s Black Devils” by Paul Murtha.

This recording is another in a series produced for Allegheny College by Chaffee Sound Productions on Chestnut Ridge Records.
