ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This concert recording of the Allegheny College Wind Symphony under the direction of Lowell E. Hepler, a professor of music and chair of the Department of Music, features performances by the 85 member Wind Symphony and the 40 member Wind Ensemble. Recorded Sunday April 28, 2019 in Shafer Auditorium.

The Wind Symphony opens the concert with “Celebration Fanfare” by Steven Reineke, chief arranger for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, followed by Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E-flat”. Next is the premiere performance of “Meditation”, written and conducted by Dr. Ronald Stitt, Assistant Director of Bands. Lowell returns and the Wind Symphony closes the first portion of the concert with “Angels in the Architecture” by Frank Ticheli. It features soprano Claire Jurs, adjunct instructor of music.

The Wind Ensemble then takes the stage to perform the final movement of Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante in Eb”. The work is a concerto for oboe (Morgan Palmer), clarinet (Dana O’Connor), bassoon (Perry Rusen-Morohovich), French horn (Abigail Johnson) and orchestra. It was arranged for wind ensemble by Ronald Stitt, and this performance is the premiere of the wind version of the orchestral part. The Wind Ensemble concludes with “Ghost Train” by Eric Whitacre.

The Wind Symphony returns with David Holsinger’s “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” conducted by Dr. Jennifer Dearden, Associate Professor of Music. They round out the concert under the baton of Lowell E. Hepler with Alfred Reed’s energetic “Hounds of Spring” and close with the immortal march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa.

This recording is another in a series produced for Allegheny College by Chaffee Sound Productions on Chestnut Ridge Records.
