Album Notes
“I am in another world, upside down and I’m a lost girl.” So goes the first line of the chorus in “Gaslight,” Almshouse’s dramatic new single and their first release since 2016’s full-length album “Bitter Thing.” Co-written by the band’s singer Irene Lambrou and her husband, guitarist Troy Schoenmeier, the song makes forceful use of what has become an Almshouse trademark: dual guitar leads featuring Schoenmeier’s electric lines harmonically interwoven with those of guitarist Tony Winkler, who also adds slide elements in all the right places. The lyrics tell a story of commanded submission, urging you to “open wide, eat the lies,” to “shut your eyes” and “close your mind,” to ignore rising waters and burning cities. Starting with sparse effect-laden guitar and sultry mournful vocals, moving through a hypnotic drum loop and an electrifying bass line by Ken Belli, the song culminates in a rush of powerful layered harmonies. It might easily allude to gaslighting on a personal level, but the song was inspired by a much bigger picture.
