Album Notes
Al Steffens breaks the mold for New Age and Ambient space music. In what he
calls "science fiction ambient," Steffens creates electronic soundscapes
merging with quasi-classical dissonances intended to induce subliminal imagery
of the dream world. The album title, as well as three of the tracks, are
inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's novel "The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath." The
track "Osgiliath" was inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings."
The influences of space music pioneers such as Brian Eno and Robert Fripp are
obvious, but the overwhelming impression of the music is impressionistic.
Like many electronic music artists Steffens takes the palette of synthetic
sounds available from the modern music synthesizer and combines them with
symphonic and acoustic instrument patches. Steffens refuses to limit himself
to the constraints of one particular music genre, which is how originality is
born, but the basic feel of this album is space ambient music.
