ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Beethoven's third piano concerto was composed 1799-1800. It finds its inspiration in Mozart's Piano Concert in C minor K.491, but he develops the orchestra's role beyond that of Mozart's time. Beethoven later wrote down the cadenza he played in 1803 at the premiere performance; that cadenza is recorded here. The Coriolan Overtue was composed in 1807 for Heinrich Joseph von Collin's 1804 tragedy Coriolan, and not, as is sometimes claimed, for William Shakespeare's play Coriolanus, although both works are about the ancient Roman leader Gaius Marcius Coriolanus. The overture was premiered in March 1807 at a private concert in the home of Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz.
