The Owl Magazine CD review:

Thank God! A band that is serious about it's music but that doesn't take themselves too seriously. This young San Francisco three-piece is writing songs that rock and make you laugh at the same time. Beyond the lyrical humor, these guys are superb songwriters that definitely created a rock'n'roll vibe for themselves on their album Original Sound Recordings. The quality production on the album coupled with dynamic arrangements and a sense of humor really give the band a depth beyond their years.

Heavy but melodic and straight-ahead is the style throughout the album. The humor is obvious in songs like "Crazy Bitch," "Porno Movie" and "DJ In Yo Band" which is a spoof rap song. The rocking continues on a more serious note with "Pops Fight," "How It Feels," "Circus" and "Blood". "Someone Like You" offers a softer side and "My Best Friend Is A Punk" taps into a dark and perhaps coping sense of humor.

AMPSEX has tight songs that rock and the band is able to relate to their audience with a depth that not many young bands can match.

Stoner Rock Album Review:

These California natives mix loud guitars with quirky lyrics in a cornucopia of hard rock and punk overtones. Catchy melodies and interesting hooks abound with Ampsex. This three piece will stop at nothing at rocking the hell out of you. The line has been drawn and Ampsex has the upper hand.

There is a sense of sarcasm and wit within the entity that is Ampsex. The band has a very accessible sound; the songs are short and to the point. The guitar tone has the crunchiness of Guns `n` Roses, with a punk attitude and pop sensibility of Weezer. The lyrics are painted with sarcasm and irony in the same sense of System of a Down. The band is tight and the production leaves some room for breathing.

So whether the listener is in a punk mood or a hard rock mood, Ampsex will be able to satisfy that hunger. The riffs will grab a hold of you and not let go. All you’ll be able to do is cry to mama.

So, a lot of bands like to involve themselves in what we like to call “self-hype”. That is great. We encourage you to listen to the music and decide for yourself…

Skeptical but WOW
Saw this band live. Was engrossed. Got the album thinking it would be on the same lines. I am blown away. Shattered really.

If you want to move to to SF buy this album and save yourself the trip.
I watched this guy live and die for music while making this album. This is the sound of Rick's life packed in his car, sleeping in his car, having his friend scratch his car, this is last call at a dirty mission bar. This is the sound of an unemployment check spent on a beer, a burrito, and studio rent. What Everclear did for Santa Monica Rick and Ampsex do for San Francisco.

Sleazegrinder

“Nobody cries in a porno movie”, Ricky Garcia sings on the ultra-catchy “Porno M
Ampsex (tragic name, I know, but the good ones were all taken a long time ago) is a power-trio from San Francisco whose sound is so slippery I had to check a few times to make sure that the songs on this, their debut full-length, were all by the same band. They vacillate wildly between crunching, glammy hard rock like the slithery opener “Pops Fight” and its punchy follow-up, “Crazy Bitch”, and 90’s altern-ica like…well, like the songs that sound like Dinosaur Jr and Weezer and Cracker. Best of the bunch? “Nobody cries in a porno movie”, Ricky Garcia sings on the ultra-catchy “Porno Movie”, and while we must be watching different shit, because I’ve seen plenty where the whole idea was to make the girls whimper and weep in terror, it’s still a great, radio-rock rock song, not unlike something Everclear woulda done before they lost the plot. Swell. Nothin’s gonna save a song called “DJ In Yo Band”, but otherwise, “Original Sound Recordings” is flush with memorable tunes, albeit commercial ones. 1992 commercial, that is. Flannel’s not gonna comeback, is it?
