Not Gonna Be Pretty

Although primarily known as 'Amy Bob,' goofy spitfire and sole female member of Grammy-nominated vocal quartet, THE BOBS, Amy Engelhardt lays down her comic persona on her first solo album. NOT GONNA BE PRETTY is a collection of 14 original songs written, arranged and produced by Engelhardt, backed by a full band.

As a pop and theater writer with a host of credits beyond the comic boundaries of The Bobs, Engelhardt evokes artists like Suzanne Vega, Jonatha Brooke, Joe Jackson. and Ben Folds.

Co-produced by keyboard wizard Bob Malone. Featuring Richard Bob Greene.

AMY ENGELHARDT is the sole female member of Grammy-nominated vocal band without instruments, The Bobs. Since joining the eccentric quartet in 1998, she has won numerous ASCAP songwriting and ACA vocal performance awards. Her writing, arrangements and vocals are featured on The Bobs' CDs COASTER (2000), 20 SONGS FROM 20 YEARS: THE BEST OF THE BOBS (2003), RHAPSODY IN BOB (2005), GET YOUR MONKEY OFF MY DOG (2007), their concert DVDs LIVE AT THE 20th CENTURY (1998), THE BOBS SING! (2001) and Coldfoot Films' recent documentary about The Bobs, SIGN MY SNARLING MOVIE (2007). Amy's brainchild, "Rhapsody In Bob" (Gershwin's concerto arranged for piano - and The Bobs as a vocal orchestra), premiered at Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts in Spring 2005.

Amy's album credits include Neil Young's LIVING WITH WAR, Bob Malone's BORN TOO LATE, Carla Ulbrich's SICK HUMOR, and THE TONY JONES VOCAL PROJECT. Amy recently sang on Jill Sobule’s track for Julia Sweeney’s upcoming film, LETTING GO OF GOD, produced by Don Was.

Wow! What a CD!
I am a long-time (since '85, baby!) fan of The Bobs, and I welcomed Amy with open arms when she joined. When she told everyone that she was going to do a solo CD, I said, "boy, this should be interesting. It is, and in a good way. The tracks are fresh, new, & innovative. From the 7-word "Are You Dead or Are You Undead?" to the haunting "Best Years of Your Life". You will find music hear unlike anything else. A true singer-songwriter CD from one of the best. GO ARE!

Wonderful from start to finish
Amy "Bob" Engelhardt's solo debut is lush, thoughtful, tuneful, and fun.

Amy puts a modern spin on the female singer-songwriter genre, with memorable melodies and intriguing lyrics.

It's pure pop for smart people (and even has a dance remix at the end)!

Not Gonna Be Pretty
LOVE this album! Many layers, lots of fun and very intelligent while being incredibly entertaining. Our kiddo LOVES this album too, he spends most morning listening to Are You Dead or Are You Undead... LOL! I especially love that as time passes and i listen tot he music again, I find totally different connections to the songs than I found previously, now THAT takes talent to create such nice layers and such lovely sound... WOW!!! From very articulate and funny smart songs, to just fun and silly, this album is RICH and FULL and GORGEOUS!!!!

Loving the sound she lets loose, Amy takes us to the pain of past and present, and turns it into hope, reflection and meaning. With wry and sly humor Amy makes the feelings relateable, and we feel her warmth and resiliance. And, of course, every song is really a love song...

I love this CD!
Loving the sound she lets loose, Amy takes lingering hurt and present uncertainty, and turns it reflective, hopeful, embraceable and relateable. Using sly humor we glimpse wry resiliancy in her songs. And, of course, every song is really a love song...

Excerpt from METROLAND review April 2008
"Amy Engelhardt enjoys words, whether she’s singing them or writing them or, in the case of her new CD, both. Her lyrics are witty, trenchant and persuasive, and she’s set them to melodies that lull you into enjoying them as catchy tunes—until they veer into contrasting territories. In other words, she’s got the craft down cold, if not better than most because she has a rare and intelligent edge in wordsmithery..."
