ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"In this time of musical change, when the Great American Songbook is suffering, here is an incredible couple who provide hope and inspiration. Andrea Baker's beautiful voice and guitar along with the unbelievable tenor saxophone of Steve Wilkerson brings that hope back. I feel truly honored." Johnny Mandel

Quietly There: The Music of Johnny Mandel (Powerhousejazzrecords) is a superb collection of Johnny Mandel songs performed by vocalist/guitarist, Andrea Baker and tenor saxophonist Steve Wilkerson. This husband and wife team is perfectly in tune with the Mandel catalog. Baker is a wonderful reader of lyrics, emotionally and musically and gently accompanies herself on guitar. Wilkerson, a long-time mainstay on the Los Angeles jazz scene plays just the right fills behind Baker and solos with creative intensity. Mandel has worked with a variety of lyricists, with Morgan Ames (Quietly There) Peggy Lee (The Shining Sea) Arthur Hamilton (Vacation from the Blues) Johnny Mercer, (Emily) the Bergman’s (Solitary Moon, Cinnamon and Clove, and Where Do You Start?) Paul Francis Webster (A Time for Love, and The Shadow of Your Smile), Lorraine Feather (Rainy Afternoon) Dave Frishberg (Little Did I Dream, El Cajon and You Are There) and Paul Williams (Close Enough for Love) represented on the disc. The program shines the spotlight on the compositional genius of Mandel, given a magic musical journey by Baker and Wilkerson. You will not be able to resist repeatedly returning to Quietly There (www.cdbaby.com)

What an impressive crafting of emotion, thought, musicality and nuance.
This is a very fine collection, and you can just tell it was done with a deep love and understanding of these lyrics and melodies. Andrea Baker's stylings makes the lyrics and Mr. Mandel's music come to life and Steve Wilkerson seems to find every interesting, pretty note with his expertly crafted solos. So enjoyable and image provoking! A+

Like a perfectly aged, smoky and rich taste of Scotch
If you know Johnny Mandel only from the theme to M*A*S*H, prepare to be moved and thrilled. If you know Andrea Baker & Steve Wilkerson only by reputation, prepare to have your life enriched. Baker's tender and knowing interpretations mine the deepest kind of warmth, humor, even tragedy from Mandel's hits and lesser known gems. Only a voice of her sort of depth, experience, richness and poignance could sustain the stripped down orchestrational choices she and Wilkerson have made and create such an entirely beguiling collection. And Steve Wilkerson is Baker's perfect foil, an imaginative and witty woodwind voice. It all works together to both reveal Johnny Mandel's brilliance and underscore why Baker & Wilkerson remain essential listening for fans of beautiful music.

Andrea Baker & Steve Wilkerson-Perfection
I've been a fan of Andrea Baker and Steve Wilkerson since the late 90's when my wife (vocalist Angela DeNiro) and I were co-hosting a weekly radio show on WSHR. We received a copy of Table For One and became mesmerized with the non-stop stream of musical ideas... from lush sensitive ballads, to in-your-face hard hitters. Now Steve and Andrea team up again and pay tribute to the legendary Johnny Mandel. I am again mesmerized...and you will be too.

Born to sing this material
Andrea Baker is born to sing this material. She has the musicality, the taste and most of all the understanding of what makes a good lyric. Johnny Mandel should be very proud. Her hubby and fantastic saxman Steve Wilkerson is a great partner for this project. Not a bad track in the bunch-- It's a jewel!

Where Do You Start?
I just finished listening to this new CD. It was luscious. I wasn't expecting the very simple arrangements, but I made the mental adjustment immediately, and the choices that these two artists made were brilliant. The beautiful lyrics and melodies really came through.

If great classics like Close Enough for Love, the Shadow of Your Smile and Where Do You Start transport you, you’ll probably enjoy every piece. Highly recommended.

Full disclosure: I live in Atlanta, but I know Andrea Baker and have followed her career over the years. She and her husband Steve are two of the most finely talented musicians on the West Coast.
