Album Notes
Andre Feriante is an award-winning, Italian-born guitarist/composer. He has traveled the world performing
concerts for the past thirty years. In the early 1990s he transitioned from traditional classical playing to
composing original music for the guitar and creating his own unique sound. The Utne Reader says “Feriante
blends classical and Spanish styles in a manner guaranteed to warm the hardest heart”. Feriante has expanded
is scope as an artist over the years by blending poetry with music, painting, writing vocal songs and
playing ukulele. In his newest album he ventures into his new form of guitar speak, in the moment heartfelt
improvisations on The Beatles. The idea for this project came from Andre’s good friend, Stan Gordon, the
owner of a Seattle software company. Upon hearing Andre’s version of ‘Yesterday’ Stan was impressed by
the subtle use of weaving a familiar song with improvisation in a non traditional way. Beatles Masquerade
is a mystical journey into our memory of these iconic songs. Using flamenco, classical, electric guitars and
ukulele Feriante offers a unique and introspective approach to each track. For example Norwegian Wood
starts out sounding like a flamenco song and about half way into the cut the familiar theme is woven into
the fabric of the improvisation. In contrast, on the song, Michelle, he uses minimal improvisation. While My
Guitar Gently Weeps, The Long and Winding Road and Eleanor Rigby are played on an electric guitar. This
is a departure for Feriante who has released twelve albums on the classical guitar and studied with Andres
Segovia in 1983. Andre uses traditional Segovia right hand technique on the electric, in a way verging into
the territory of Mark Knopfler or Wes Montgomery who mainly used only his right hand thumb. This softer
sound blends nicely on this album with the rest of the tracks that are recorded on nylon strings. The Fool on
the Hill may be the most abstract take on the record where he only alludes to the theme but comes back to
the chorus in a very Spanish manor. This cut is played on a guitar by the late Richard Schneider, it’s modern
classical guitar with an off-set sound hole and can sound very full and rich, almost piano like. Feriante wraps
up the journey with a whimsical and light-hearted version of Yellow Submarine on the ukulele. Beatles Masquerade
is Andre Feriante’s thirteenth album. We hope it brings you much joy and satisfaction and it might
lead you to explore the rest of his catalogue.
