ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Australian drummer, bandleader and jazz educator Andrew Dickeson is very excited to be releasing his new CD “The Song Is You” - featuring saxophonist Nick Hempton, Carl Dewhurst on guitar and Ashley Turner on bass.

Dickeson, whose resumé is a “who’s who” of Australian and International jazz greats took this group into the studio in late September, 2017.

He says “Upon learning that Nick, with whom I had played a great many times before he moved to New York City, was coming to Sydney I started planning repertoire and arrangements. We went into the studio and had a ball. We were all in the same room - no headphones, all analog, no effects or post-production- a real “old school” jazz session. I am very happy with the way it turned out!”
He continues “Nick was always a strong, confident player - with deep roots in the Jazz tradition - and during his time in NYC he has really developed his own sound and style.
“Carl Dewhurst has long been one of my favourite guitar players - he can play in any style and always expresses himself with energy, creativity and soul.”
“Ashley Turner and I have been playing together for many years and it’s always a pleasure - he’s rock-solid and his note choice always keeps the music happening.”
The CD presents a diverse selection of Andrew’s favourite tunes - from Thelonious Monk, Bernie McGann, Jerome Kern, Cedar Walton, Oscar Hammerstein and more.

Recorded direct to 1” tape at Electric Avenue Studios, in September 2017, using Vintage Audio Technology. Engineered by Philip Punch & mastered by Bob Scott. Phil Punch - Engineer at Electric Avenue Studios:
" I have long been impressed and inspired by the brilliant recordings made by Mr Roy DuNann - chief engineer for Contemporary Records during the late 1950's and 1960's. He recorded many of the greatest Jazz artists of that era.
DuNann's mantra was just this:
"keep it simple".
His groundbreaking minimalist approach resulted in some of the most vibrant and sonically exciting jazz records of all time.
With this recording we are endeavouring to follow in his footsteps."
