Album Notes
For Us, The Living is an effort to honor tradition by focusing on looking toward the future. All of the compositions recorded on this album were written by living American composers.

The title comes from President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address of 1863. Lincoln's speech urged Americans to appreciate, honor and respect the unsung and fallen heroes, and to further their unfinished work to usher in a new era. 2013 marked the 150th anniversary of the Address and so it seemed a fitting title for an album featuring living American composers, and carrying on the tradition of those who came before.

This is my dedication to the musical giants upon whose shoulders I stand. Rather than re-interpret and re-perform their works, I want to extend the timeline of jazz with new compositions and performances by the best living composers and musicians today.

The Magic of Hadro's Baritone Sax
FOR US, THE LIVING is a brilliant tour de force by Andrew Hadro with fellow composers and musicians showcasing new compositions while acknowledging the rich tradition of jazz that came before.

Each piece is beautiful and outstanding. Hadro’s Allegrecia is among the most unusual on this extraordinary album, haunting and subtle. His Hurricane Sandy seems to capture the energy and feeling of the namesake event. What magical range and delicacy Hadro is able to play with that baritone.

These contemporary musicians and composers represent the art of modern jazz, focusing on Hadro’s baritone sax, and other instruments, never used to better improvisational effect. These are original pieces, art works beautifully performed by the best in their field. Incomparable modern jazz and jazz musicians, led by the great Andrew Hadro. A tribute to themselves and their jazz forebears.

Bari sax singing!
Great work! Awesome! I really like the way bary sounds! Very warm, deep and the same time light sound!
Nice arrangements! Standing on a mainstrem jazz tradition album gives us a chance to know what is the bari sax nowdays! Its singing! Its grooving! Its whispering! Just wanted to mention the great work of rhythm section and nice work of sound engineers!

Let me start by saying that Andrew Hadro is my favorite baritone player and I have seen him perform live many times. That being said, there are some Jazz greats whose recordings don't match their live performances. This is not the case with this album. It is every bit as great as hearing Mr. Hadro perform live. I have the CD version. Being an audiophile, the first thing I listen for is the recording quality of the album. Well, the recording quality is excellent. The liner notes state that the recording was done at Stadium Red by Tyler McDiarmid. Mixed and mastered by Michael Perez-Cisneros. They did an excellent job. My audio system is very revealing and not very forgiving, so I can tell you that they did a superb job. The artists on this album are Andrew Hadro - Baritone Saxophone and Flute, the great Daniel Foose on Contra Bass, the great Carmen Staaf on acoustic grand piano, and Matt Wilson on drums and cymbals. Theses are top notch musicians who did a fantastic job creating this masterpiece. Six of the ten songs are composed by Andrew Hadro. One of the other four is Paola, one of my favorite songs written by one of my favorite Tenor sax players, Ryan Anselmi. ALL the songs on this album are performed with the perfection that you would expect from the A-List Jazz Artist Andrew Hadro. He's one of those sticklers for detail who leaves no stone unturned. His sound, his playing, his choice of musicians, the recording quality and the compositions chosen for this album make it a five star album in my book. This CD won't be collecting any dust on my CD rack. As an aside, whenever I listen to an album, I sometimes have a complaint about the order that the cuts are in on the album. In this case, I would have put these songs in the same order they are in on the album. Great in every way!
