ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Music Therapy Services of Portland is meant to be a safe haven for families. One of our greatest missions is to serve the entire family of a child or teen with special needs. We want parents and caretakers to walk in, lead their child to the awaiting music therapist, and then grab a cup of tea before relaxing in the waiting room. If the sound of passing cars doesn’t relax you, feel free to turn on some music. If this is your only chance to make phone calls or run an errand, use this time for you! After 50 minutes, be prepared to receive an update from the music therapist working with your child. Although we find that most kids work better without parents in the room, we don’t ever want our parents to feel like they’re in the dark when it comes to the goals, objectives and progress of their child. We may recommend particular books, articles or videos for you. We may create videos for the entire family to engage in together at home throughout the week.

For many families, we are a part of a greater team that may include many allied health professionals. Please invite us to IEP or team meetings and know that we are always happy to share our progress and hear about the goals and objectives of other team members.

Music Therapy Services of Portland maintains a very specific intention: to discover the gifts beyond a diagnosis. Yes, families are seeking services because their children have challenges at home or at school. But we know that behavior is communication and that these children have unique gifts can help to unveil. Specific goals and objectives will be created over the first few weeks and reviewed every twelve weeks. In addition to addressing these within every session, we strive to discover and highlight as much strength and passion as possible so that children are inspired and excited to return for more.

Angie Kopshy is the founder and director of Music Therapy Services of Portland.
