Album Notes
ANNABELLE CHVOSTEK is a fearless and innovative artist
whose beguiling left-of-centre songs straddle the divide
between mainstream roots and acoustic indie-pop.
She is one of Canada’s outstanding contemporary
songwriters, attracting international attention with her
persuasive vocals, compelling lyrics and genrespanning
Chvostek’s latest CD Live from Folk Alley is her first ever live
release. It puts the listener front-and-center in an intimate
solo concert setting. Chvostek’s understated guitar virtuosity
is especially in evidence, as is her extraordinary voice. ‘Live
from Folk Alley’ is an exquisite snapshot of one of North
America’s finest folk artists. The set was recorded on the
performance stage at BluSeed Studios, an arts centre in
Saranac Lake, New York, and produced by Linda Fahey and Jeff
Oehler for Folk Alley.
In the spring of 2011, Annabelle performed at a number of
North American venues with Bruce Cockburn in support of his latest release Small Source of Comfort,
which features two co-written duets between Chvostek and the Canadian songwriting legend.
Her 2008 studio album Resilience (Borealis Records) was recorded with Grammy-nominated Canadian
producer Roma Baran (Laurie Anderson) and Vivian Stoll. 'Resilience' has received rave reviews
internationally and was nominated for "Contemporary Album of the Year" at the 2008 Canadian Folk
Music Awards.
'Resilience' was a much anticipated solo release following two and a half years of recording and
touring with Canadian band The Wailin’ Jennys, highlights of which included several appearances on
A Prairie Home Companion, performing at New York's legendary Town Hall and singing on the Juno
Awards telecast. Chvostek's songs were repeatedly singled out by critics as highlights of the Jennys'
Juno-nominated CD, Firecracker. Her opening song "Devil's Paintbrush Road" was the #1 song at US
folk radio in 2006.
“Fiercely talented ... Chvostek has a sultry voice you can’t and won’t forget.”
Suzy Malik, Xtra, Toronto
In addition to Annabelle’s collaborations with Bruce Cockburn, other musicians that she has worked
with include renowned artist Mary Gauthier, Ani DiFranco alumnus Julie Wolf and multiple
Juno nominee Michael Jerome Browne.
“...this is music that takes your soul on the road.”
Western Morning News, UK
