Album Notes

Anna Gutmanis, an award-winning songwriter, singer and keyboardist, entwines her brave, edgy lyrics with deep, blues-style vocals. In 2007, Anna sought out producer Karen Kane to record “I Am Who I Am,” an anthemic celebration of queer identity, along with its darker counterpart, “Let it Slide.” Both tracks are receiving international airplay, and the 2009 video of “I Am Who I Am,” screened at LGBT film festivals in Europe and North America, can be viewed on YouTube, The Q-Tube, and One More Lesbian. Anna is a longstanding musician on the Canadian music scene. Throughout the 1980s, she performed in feminist cabarets, popular clubs, and one of Toronto’s first pride celebrations. The single, “Then Came You,” from her 1989 self-titled album, can still be heard on Canadian radio stations. This debut release received airplay in every Canadian province and territory, and further productions earned her a FACTOR grant for Canadian Talent on Record. As a social activist, Anna has performed at numerous benefits for women’s and trans shelters. In the 1990s, Anna took an extended hiatus from her music to complete a degree in Equity and Sexual Diversity Studies, while working as a counsellor-advocate, and raising her children with partner Georgia Wilder. Now able to work on her music full time and buoyed by her Pride in The Arts "2009 Pride Song" Award for "I Am Who I Am", she is planning to tour and to record an album of new material.
