Album Notes
From Anne McNamara: Each piece holds some special meaning for me. I first learned of Tony Plog’s “Scherzo” while working in Utah and the Antheil sonata was a piece I first encountered during my doctoral degree at the University of Maryland. It was at UMD that I met Kevin and learned of his music. The fact that I was able to record his “Under Western Skies” with our former teacher, Chris, is really special. “The Storyteller” is a work by Jim Stephenson that speaks to the impact of the late, great trumpeter Bud Herseth on the trumpet world. Again, getting to record this beautiful work with one of my trumpet heroes, turned mentor and friend, was a lot of fun. Lastly, the flugelhorn is a passion of mine and I hope to continue to commission new works for this underserved instrument. It is my belief that the Cooman sonata will become a standard of our repertoire as the first sonata written for the flugelhorn. I like to think of Kevin’s “A Winter’s Night” as a warm cup of cocoa for the soul. Hopefully it will “cure what ails you” or give you a musical lift if you need it.

Anne McNamara currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Campbellsville University where she teaches trumpet, conducts the CU Trumpet Ensemble and CU Brass Ensemble and teaches several academic classes. In addition to her duties at CU, Dr. McNamara works regularly as a freelance trumpeter throughout the state of Kentucky including performances with the Louisville Orchestra and Louisville Master Chorale.

Anne also actively pursues the commission and performance of new works such as her commission of Carson Cooman’s Sonata for Flugelhorn and Piano and the adaptation of Kevin McKee’s A Winter’s Night. She is also very active as a clinician and educator giving many university and high school masterclasses each year. In summer 2019 she will teach trumpet at the University of Kentucky Summer Trumpet Institute and she will perform a recital at the International Women's Brass Conference. In 2018 she presented a warm-up class and conducted the CU Trumpet Ensemble at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in San Antonio, TX. Dr. McNamara is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
