ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Because some people like a little backstory, below are a few notes on the songs from my first record--

Promise
-- Is the story of a lopsided friendship where one person is wishing for something more. She doesn’t want to jeopardize what they have by revealing how she feels, but she’s only barely keeping it concealed in sarcasm.

His Beautiful Daughter
-- Was inspired watching my husband’s bewilderment at our four-year old daughter’s mastery of the art of flirting. Having grown up in a house with four brothers and no sisters, I think he found her unabashed femininity very surprising. I wrote the song imagining a bittersweet scene still in the future.

Extraordinary Man
-- My husband, of course! But I like imagining that at least one guy was left brokenhearted and regretful when I got married :)

As Long as it Takes
-- Every girl with a guitar has an angry chick song

Beauty in Disguise
-- Even though our little kids drive us crazy sometimes, we all try our best to savor the days when they still think we're great.

My Marie
-- I wrote this for my mother but it's her parents' story. I wanted to give to my grandfather words to explain his unkind ways over the years and a chance to apologize.

Wings for a While
-- I am trying to live a useful, worthy life; I'm lucky, I know it, and I'm grateful and good most of the time. But doesn't everyone fantasize about flying away sometimes?

14 Months and 7 Days
-- I wrote this based on the heartbreak I felt watching friends try to cope with their toddler twins, one of whom was severely autistic. I think it can be about any parent who is bordering on obsessed with a child's problem, illness, addiction, etc.

She Could Have Loved Him
-- Is the story I expected when I heard a completely different song of the same title. I wrote it with a bluegrass band in mind, hoping to add some thoughtful material for a female singer in genre in which the male perspective dominates.

Perfect
-- Is a real life love song about accepting limitations and imperfection, but appreciating the freedom that comes with confidence in another person’s devotion.

Understudy
-- Is the story of a complex friendship between adolescent girls

The Girl I Left Behind
-- Changes the presumed voice of a well-known traditional fiddle tune of the same name from male to female. Growing up is difficult and painful but can be fodder for a lot of laughs later if you’re lucky enough to share it with close sisters.

Cherokee Shuffle
-- Inspired by Michele Shocked's record, Arkansas Traveler, in which she intertwined new melodies with old fiddle tunes and at once expressed appreciation for the music, and sorrow over the social attitudes of the day.

I love this album. Tenderness and maturity and beautiful heartfelt vocals. Great instrumentation as well.
