ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Exchange is about a coming together, a sharing of ideas, experiences and expressions. It is a teaching as well as learning event, a dialogue between differences and similarities. It represents and highlights the uniqueness of people, of cultures and of approaches to reality. It is what gives us an understanding of each other and allows us to appreciate the diversities of our world.

The music herein represents a continuum of many experiences both here in the U.S. and abroad. Such experiences cross many musical boundaries, and is the impetus for the music you are about to hear. If music is indeed a universal language, then it provides one of the best vehicles for social and cultural exchange.

As a witness to music's universal effect on humanity, I have come to realize the power of music to transform, transcend and transmit energies on many levels of human interaction. This is why I have chosen “The Exchange” as the title of this debut CD and also why I have chosen to delve into music of different cultural and stylistic inflections. For the music presented here takes you to many distant places and bridges the gap between cultural variables.

The inspiration behind each selection on this recording and indeed the inspiration to do a world music oriented CD stems from my experience as a 1996 U.S. Jazz Ambassador to Africa, in which I toured, performed and gave workshops about jazz music, along with pianist Vince Evans, throughout various countries in Africa, including
Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Congo, Zaire, Morocco and Tunisia.
I consider that experience as a musical and spiritual rites of passage, which has helped to expand my musical horizon and helped to give shape and focus to my musical vision.

This recording introduces me, along with my world music group "Sounds Of The City”. I felt compelled to form a constituency, which could fuse elements of jazz, Latin, funk, fusion and other sounds indicative of world music, with the purpose of bringing people of diverse musical appetites into a common fold. In essence
I want to reach the broadest audience of music listeners possible. At the same time I want to make sure that artistic integrity is preserved. All of the musicians on this recording are highly skilled and exhibit considerable knowledge and musical proficiency in a variety of musical context, especially in the area of spontaneous improvisation.

It is hoped that you, the listener, will allow the music to speak to you void of any preconceptions, only with the expectation that the music is of high quality, sincere effort and honest intentions. If your investment in this CD brings you joy, peace and good vibrations then it has indeed served its purpose, if not, then hopefully future endeavors will. I hope however that all who listen will enjoy. Peace & Love !!!

Antonio Parker
