Album Notes
A happy song that began with a kī ho‘alu (open tuning) instrumental by Keoki Apokolani Carter—as the musical foundation of Hele On Kinda Day. The Hawaiian word "Hele" means "To go, come, walk; ... going, moving", and that is what this song is all about. The rhythm just makes you want to move. Released as a single, Hele On Kinda Day is a vocal duet of Keoki and Yvonne. Keoki plays kī ho‘alu guitar, and baritone ukulele.

From Yvonne who co-wrote with Keoki, "It feels like this song was written by the land after a heart-opening morning walking a nearby stream. As soon as we got back home, Keoki slacked the guitar until the strings made sounds he liked, and just started playing. Hearing new music being born, I dashed for the recorder to capture the moment and make sure this would not join some of his other new compositions that came and went like the wind. After listening back, Keoki asked to see if any lyrics would come to me. So I went upstairs with the recorder, put on headphones and the words fell onto the paper. There was the feeling and images in the music, so lyrics and melody just flowed like the morning and the stream. This song was fully born in about two hours, three hours max from the time we walked back in the door. After that Keoki wanted to figure out this new open tuning so he could play it again, so we got on the piano figuring out each string. Three of them were C#. And since then many more songs have come out of Keoki and that tuning from the ‘āina."

The studio recording and master has been a much longer journey than the birth of the song. Between the time it was written in 2007 and this release, Keoki built two baritone ukulele as student, and apprentice which reconnected him to the instrument of his youth. The baritone ukulele also gave birth to a string of jazz originals that made up his first album "Red Wine And Blue Skies" in 2012. Hele On Kinda Day, gets back to his earlier guitar compositions and is one of several yet-to-be-recorded originals he calls his "pili ‘āina songs".

Mahalo to Sonny Lim for recording in his studio and helping launch Hele On Kinda Day. And at the very end, when it still seemed "something was missing" when listening to the final mix, for suggesting the addition of the ukulele and graciously joining in on the bass. Hope this song brightens up your day.
