“FIRST VOYAGE” is ArcoIris Sandoval’s debut trio album featuring Marty Kenney on bass and Allan Mednard on drums.

The tracks feature six original compositions by Ms. Sandoval inspired by astronomy and environmental themes. “Maroon Nebula” is a reference to synesthesia and a love of celestial bodies. “Spiral into Oblivion” is a response to the environmental changes induced by human activity and climate change. “Fox Hunt,” inspired by the life of comedian Red Fox, won an ASCAP Herb Alpert Jazz Composer’s award in 2013.

The “Sonic Asylum” track is conceptually described as ArcoIris Sandoval’s modern jazz composition that attempts to create an aural environment which connects emotionally and intellectually with the audience. It is also about providing a positive outlet from reality and surrounding the listeners with something that heals as well as energizes.

The three “interpreted” standards on the album are “Footprints” (Wayne Shorter), “How Deep Is the Ocean” (Irving Berlin), and “Naima” (John Coltrane).
