Album Notes
The Boston-based sister duo Ari & Mia [Ariel and Mia Friedman] reference the traditions of Southern and Northeastern fiddle music and the early American songbook to create a realm where their own compositions cross paths with older traditions. Add a sprinkling of classical and early jazz influences plus intricate sisterly harmonies and the result is a unique hybrid sound that is both joyous and intimate. Says SingOut! magazine, Ari & Mia “blend a traditional rootsy grounding with a clear background of classical training. Their own works are soothing and fresh, tasteful and accomplished. This duo is taking the classical study of a conservatory program and bringing it alive in folk touring circles.” Both graduates of the New England Conservatory, the talented siblings compose a majority of their music, infusing contemporary ideas into the repertoire of oft-covered old-time string band standards. Winner of ASTA’s 2009 Alternative Styles Award, Ariel is a virtuosic cellist who has toured internationally with well-known fiddler Hanneke Cassel, is the founding member of her classical string ensemble, the Cardamom Quartet and has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s splinter group Classical Tangent. Mia is a fiddle player and singer of immense skill and reputation, also excelling in clawhammer banjo and guitar. She won the 2010 John Lennon Songwriting Contest with her song “Across the Water.” Ari & Mia's two previous records — 2010’s Unruly Heart and 2013’s acclaimed Land on Shore — were released to critical acclaim.

killer album
This album is phenomenal. Ari & Mia have taken all the best parts of traditional folk and bluegrass and added to it their unique style, full of special flavors. These songs are filled with these unexpected metrical, tempo, harmonic changes that never disappoint. There's a huge emotional range. One song is built out of a Bach chorale! Awesome. I love this CD. Buy it!
