ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Years ago when Armida Siguion-Reyna first started the television show “Aawitan Kita”, a lot of people felt she would run out of material perhaps within a year. After all, each show uses at least 14 songs and just how many Filipino songs are there? If anyone could answer that, it would be Armida, who has some 800 songs, sets of lyrics, and arrangements memorized, and many others on the fringes of her mind, within call, within a range of usefulness.
Years later “Aawitan Kita” still lingers on. There have been changes of director, channel changes and performers as well. But the professional approach ,the painstaking devotion to detail, the loving attention to the message of the song- these are still there because these are Armida. She not only produces and sings in each show, but she participates actively and enthusiastically in its conceptions. The resulting show, which won CAT (Citizen’s Award for Television) trophies in the seventies, because it presents the music and sentiments of the Filipino soul with elegance, visual excitement, professional polish,,and warm understanding as well as citations for musical director Leopoldo Silos for mining the teasures of Philippine music and his skilled arrangements of these in ways that invite both nostalgia and empathy. The song “Aawitan Kita”, composed for her by Leopoldo Silos, does indeed express what she wants to do, and what she’s doing with her life.
The songs in this album range through the work of our best known composers, and through the whole romantic vision of the Filipino song, treating of the themes of traditional Tagalog poetry, and Love of course. One song, with music by Leopoldo Silos and lyrics by publisher Manuel P.Villar, Sr., “Diyos Lamang ang Nakakaalam”, expresses the historic Philippine resignation and acceptance of life.
The old Jovita Fuentes love song, “Ay,Ay, Kalisud” is given new dimension, with lyrics that speak of national freedom and unity. This album will bring a clear desire to communicate both message and sensibility, its melancholy and lyricism and its growing nationalistic awareness.
