Mundus Canis

by Armin Abdihodzic & Eric Bleicher

"Mundus Canis" explores the uncharted territory of contemporary music written for classical guitar and different percussion instruments. The richness of this repertoire is amazingly colorful and even today it intrigues/challenges composers and performers.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Armin Abdihodzic and Eric Bleicher wanted to do something very different from the usual "classical" repertoire and decided to pair up instruments that cannot be seen together too often. With plenty of experience in different musical styles, they both wanted to challenge themselves and the listeners with a brand new listening experience.

"Mundus Canis" is an adventure that takes the listeners through different stages of musical experience.
Terry Riley's "Dias de los Muertos" is quite remarkable composition that mixes gestures and techniques that we usually associate with this great American composer, but it also gives us something new and refreshing. The development of musical ideas is reinforced with a wide pallet of rhythmic ideas and topped with different tuning in guitar and interesting selection of percussion colors and it all comes together in this semi-macabre musical journey.
Erdmann's "Episodes" are a great example of the guitar-percussion repertoire that came from German composers in 1970s. These short pieces show great balance between melodic and harmonic ideas presented in the guitar part and rhythmic drive done through very limited pitched percussion instruments.
Probably the most famous piece for this type of ensemble, Lou Harrison's "Serenade" pictures the composer's inspiration with Middle Eastern music and all the elements that he found refreshing at the time, even though some might have sounded too simple or too naive for such a great composer. This piece has a capturing aura around it and it shines through every note.
"Mundus Canis" or "A Dog's World" is a set of five short pieces depicting George Crumb's dogs and each one offers us a snippet into their characters. Rhythmic precision is contrasted with innovative colors and sounds, and typical of Crumb the listeners are drawn into a vivid musical experience.
"Serie" is composition that relies on a collage of smaller sections that either reference symmetrical melodies, strict rhythms, and warm colors of Spanish music or completely contrast them with atonality and free flow.
Written only a few years ago, "Taï-Chi" depicts an image of an older man practicing this ancient art in a park and contrasting the busyness of the modern world that surrounds him. The composition is done in a circular form with two contrasting sections, introduction and the main theme.
"Draws" is the most avant garde composition on the album and challenges listeners to accept a lot of dense material in a short time. Each movement includes a section where both instruments are working together, but mostly the instruments are challenging each other and reacting to the ideas that are being presented.
