ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Born in Minneapolis, raised on Bob Dylan and Prince, Aron Van Alstine is a long way from home. As a teenager he traded piano lessons for the electric guitar. Disillusioned by musical academia, he studied poetry in college. His travels began at a protest in Washington D.C. and ended three years later on the beach in Brazil. Along the way he’s played everywhere from backyards to concert halls. His journey led him to a counter-cultural town on the outskirts of L.A. where he currently teaches, performs, and surfs.

November 2012 brings the release of "A Kind of Silence." This EP features the musicianship of Greg Weiser (drums) and Dave Anter (Bass) and the engineering magic of Rory Stalwick and Tony Humecke. Aron continues to showcase his versatility with an album that's heavy, dreamy, and funky. The songs sound strangely familiar, recombining genres and moods in unusual ways. The lyrics invoke a kind of protest music that isn’t topical or righteous. Aron’s work asks us to question our expectations.

The title track is reminiscent of Nirvana circa 1994, with a pinch of David Lee Roth circa 1985. It's confused, outraged, silly, and completely compelling. "No Refrain" is not so much a song as it is a mood. It's about dying a tedious death as elegantly as possible. "Make Up Your Mind" is a jam for the 99%. Inspired by the Occupy Movement, this song addresses the complexities and frustrations of the contemporary middle class. And it grooves.

In addition to working full-time and supporting their families, Aron Van Alstine and his trio are currently booking shows and developing new material. Please support them by buying a record, following them online, or attending a show.
