ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Ars Mueller is an ensemble dedicated to beautiful sacred choral music. It features the wonderfully evocative compositions of Christopher Mueller, who conducts the ensemble, and who has written hundreds of short unaccompanied choral pieces for the liturgy. Its other focus is Renaissance polyphony, that treasure-trove of astonishing and elegant vocal counterpoint, with an emphasis on less well-known works. Our hope is to spread beauty to hearts that long for it, as a salve to the soul — and we encourage others to perform this great music, and be caught up in the rapture of ensemble singing. May the music inspire you, and may you enjoy it as much as we have!

Who is Ars Mueller? A collection of New York City's finest choral singers, who came together for ten evenings in 2013 & 2014 to record nearly fifty pieces of music. We have lovingly selected the best performances to include here.

Why Ars Mueller? To present the music of Christopher Mueller, whose compositions deserve a wider hearing. Also, to highlight the gorgeous Renaissance polyphony that inspires him and so many other musicians, and has been for over 500 years!

Why the name "Ars Mueller"? Musical styles continually evolve and change. During the middle ages, the "Ars Antiqua" (the "old art" or "old style" of the 13th century) gave way to the "Ars Nova" (the "new art" of the 14th century), which then blossomed into the Renaissance period (the 15th and 16th centuries). Since this ensemble features numerous compositions by Christopher Mueller, we thought to entitle it "Ars Mueller", and claim our own stylistic niche in the modern age — as well as hearkening back to the past.

Who will enjoy this music? Anyone who loves the human voice and good ensemble singing, and who invites transcendence with open ears and open heart. Come, listen, and be swept away!

All compositions are by Christopher Mueller, except as noted below:
3. Rorate caeli (Jakob Handl)
6. Tribus miraculis (Hans Leo Hassler)
8. My God, my God (John Blow)
11. Fremuit spiritus Jesu (Clemens non Papa)
14. Ascendens Christus (Tomás Luis de Victoria)
17. O sacrum convivium (Hans Leo Hassler)
20. Lux aeterna (Jean Richafort, from his Requiem in memoriam Josquin Desprez)
