ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
As a musician, the most fascinating element of music has been to observe how parts work together to create expression. As studied as the process has been, there are coincidental points along the way that can mutate existing trends, which are attributed to inspiration and can only be partially explained. The transition from being an interpreter to being a creative artist has implied the willingness to define seminal musical perceptions in both complex and simple ways.

“The Cosmic Ladybug” project was inspired one Sunday morning by a ladybug who decided to land on a styrofoam cup that I'd been drinking from. The ladybug circled the rim with much interest, in both directions, peering into the cup but never descending into it. What an apt symbol for our time and struggles, thought I: a beetle of ancient lore circling curiously on a product of modern convenience, a lady-bugged man, or a lady bugged by men; a living bridge blending profane and profound.

The word “opera” is used in its etymological sense as the Latin plural of “opus,” which means “work.” Before the highly theatrical operas of recent centuries, “opera” meant a series of works with a related theme, that involved singing. The theme of “The Cosmic Ladybug” is about the transformation of our conditioned consciousness. It can be seen as a thesis on love that uses archetypal musical and linguistic form for its expression. The plot is an ongoing process that involves the perception of common facts.

The piano writing consistently uses a three-dimensional matrix, whereby at least three interactive musical processes are creating the musical fabric. The verbal poetic movement is cyclical, uses considerable fork-tongued insinuations, and speaks of darkness to light.
