Album Notes
The album begins with a chant honoring Elegua, the opener of doors; it is led by Erick Barbería, ably supported by
John Santos and Luís Barbería. The use of traditional percussion is persuasive and authentic.
Tony Williams' "Mutants On The Beach" shows an imaginative upbeat expression where each of the soloists takes advantage of his opportunity to shine. The rhythm is on fire, with praises to Keith Jones, Robertito Melendez,
David Jackson, and Serge Kasimoff!
"Besame Mucho" moves from danzón to inspired cha-cha-cha to mambo with unforgettable performances by all.
"To The End Of The World" and "Cape Verdean Blues" are quite simply a breath of fresh air; Gary Bias and Mark Cargill's tenor and violin solos are scintillating, infectious displays of excellence paving a sure path to enjoyment provided by the enlightened, dapper message from John Peña, David Goldblatt, David Jackson, Bill Ortíz, Melecio Magdaluyo, Roberto Quintana, and Jesús Díaz on the Horace Silver hymn that follows.
The featured vocal on the album, "Incompatibilidade", is provided by the beautiful Ms. Katia Moraes; combined with Jeff Cressman's excellent trombone fills, percussion by Steven Kroon and Paul VW, this jewel will leave a lingering, completely satisfying taste on the pallet.
"Coquí" and "Love For Sale En Concierto" are major works featuring world class performances by Oriente López,
Justo Almario, Ramón Stagnaro, Alex Acuña, Chembo Corniel, Gilbert Castellanos, Otmaro Ruíz, René Camacho,
John Beasley, and Bill Ortíz. These are "show stoppers"!
What a magnificent array of performers and performances!
