ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
ART OF FLYING is music(s) woven around the songs of David & Anne Costanza. Formerly of So-Cal area 80's noise-improv-second-wave-ska-party band THE WHITEFRONTS & more recently the New Mexico-based eldritch-folk LORDS OF HOWLING. Since 1997 they have recorded & released 5 CD's on DISCOBOLUS rechords & one 10" vinyl record on San Francisco's COCHON records. They record at their own studio, the BARN (see Tape-Op #5, or thereabouts) in Questa, NM. The core of the band includes David on guitar, piano & singering; Anne on Bass & singering; Peter Halter on drums & guitarist, singer, world-lover Larry Yes.
Recent comparisons have included, Ida, Freakwater, Neutral Milk Hotel, Giant Sand, Holy Modal Rounders, Incredible String Band & Guided by Voices. It might be just as instructive to imagine the kind of musicks that would eminate from the collision of W.B. Yeats, C.P. Cavafy, James Merrill & Emily Dickinson locked up in a cottage full of guitars, delay-pedals, old tape decks, kids running around & the odd trumpet or tuba. Could happen.

WESTWORD (Denver, CO) 12/22/05

ahab-blowhole-mythology made effortless (or seemingly so!)
Like Ahab obsessed with that rascally whale, ART OF FLYING frontman David Costanza stares down the blowhole of seafaring mythology. Straight outta Questa, New Mexico, & with a refined taste for sad, psychedelic folk, AOF harpoons the beast with quiet, loving precision. Better yet, the unassuming trio makes it alll seem effortless. --John La Briola

Potvaliant

Art of Flying is your friend.
This cd is beautiful. Songs that are as achingly heartbreaking as life itself, sung by an old man with the heart of a child. Folk-savant arrangements add to the both-ends-of-the-lifespan feel; ambitious arrangements played with a minimum of skill and a maximum of emotion. These songs feel like they might fly apart at any moment, but are held together only by their sheer gravity. Think Will Oldham, Mark Linkous, Jeff Mangum - Dave Costanza deserves a seat at that table.
