ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Playing custom-built guitars by Pimentel and Sons, husband and wife duo, Lesle St.John and Ukiah Odom, spread their musical wings with a delightful spectrum of holiday instrumentals. Recorded at their home studio in Fountain Hills, Arizona, the fifteen tracks offer over forty-five minutes of listening pleasure. The crystalline tones of Lesle’s nylon string classical soar lightly above Ukiah’s steel-string “jazz” guitar. The listener sails above the Verde River, ancient saguaro cactus and pungent sage in a broad musical landscape.

Their renaissance duets, “Lesson for Two Lutes”, and, “Toy”, transport one back in time over hundreds of years to an intimate parlor with a view of Shakespeare’s back yard. It was recorded live by the artists to sound just the way it would by the fireplace with the smell of pine cones and nutmeg. In other selections, stylistic elements blend seamlessly from a country-swing “Away In the Manger” to a jazzy “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”.

The title track, “Carol of the Birds”, is a haunting melody arranged by Art of Music (Lesle and Ukiah) for two guitars. A traditional Catalonian carol of unknown origins, it expresses a timeless hope and inspiration. “A New Song for Christmas” is an original piece evoking the spirit of the season. Its simple melody carries your imagination with it as the music gradually layers in lush sounds of multiple guitars. The mandolin (played by Ukiah) featured in this piece can be heard also in their expressive rendition of “We Three Kings of Orient Are”. The unique qualities of each of the artists – and their respective instruments – can be heard in Lesle’s interpretation of “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” and with Ukiah’s solo guitar original, the Southwestern-themed, “Roadrunner’s Flight”.

Lesle and Ukiah welcome you to their multi-textured work; a musical world designed to be enjoyed throughout the year. The album ends with a showpiece original, “Holiday in the Hills”, written in honor of their desert home town with its magical fountain and distant amethyst mountains. Ukiah plays a Washburn acoustic bass guitar in this tasteful anthem, mixed with just the right seasonings of classical and jazz.
