Album Notes
There's this euphoria, that of finding something unfamiliar, being adventurous and delving deep into its nooks and crannies, and making it your own. Growing up in the East, half a world away from anything remotely Flamenco, my early exposure to the music was through the movies and the odd audio cassette or LP of Flamenco greats. I was instantly smitten with the energy and the passion it exuded. The rapid, impressive flourishes, the passionate rhythms and distinctly staccato style mesmerized me. Though I never had the chance to formally learn this style, I listened to all I could get hold of.

A large part of my musical career has been rock-and-roll which ultimately defines my personal style as an artist. I've known musicians to often start with what they know best and incorporate influences from the unfamiliar, but my fascination with Flamenco made me decide to shift gears by starting with the unfamiliar and to put together an ambitious worldbeat project which I'd always dreamed of creating - a cross pollination of contemporary popular music with Spanish Flamenco. That, in short, is how "Rumbadoodle" was conceived.

The Flamenco repertory is vast. It incorporates many meters, simple and complex, and there are over 50 different palos, or musical styles. The focus in this record is on the Flamenco Rumba, also called Gypsy Rumba, Spanish Rumba or simply Rumba. At the expense of sounding academic, it's one of the cantes de ida y vuelta, referring to the round-trip the music and songs took, jaunting to the new world, then making their way back to Spain in a few form, having evolved, ever so slightly.

This Afro-Cuban influence is visible in the title track of this record and many others. Unlike traditional flamenco, the Rumba may be played in any key - major, minor and modal. This made it more appropriate in fusion with not only Western contemporary pop and rock music, but also the odd traditional influence like Celtic or Arabic sound that appear occasionally in the record. This fact, and the fact that 4/4 meter with 4 beats per bar, make the musical pieces accessible to a much wider and mainstream audience is my belief.

These compositions have been painstakingly recorded and brought to life by a brilliant cast of musicians from all over the world. many of them have contributed to the process of songwriting, helping me with new, fresh ideas that I, on my own, could never have imagined possible. This wouldn't have seen the light of day without the support of all these guys as well as the engineers, artists, and other personnel involved. For this I am eternally grateful.

This record was a personal journey, a jaunt, un viaje de ida y vuelta, at the end of which, much like the round tripping songs, I've also evolved as an artist. I hope you enjoy listening to this music as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Any description of Arun Shenoy’s current GRAMMY-nominated CD, Rumbadoodle would have to include the word “fusion” - Arun’s music is an intriguing cross-cultural experience. As the title implies the predominate flavor of this mélange is Rumba flamenco, but is generously spiced with dashes of pop, rock, worldbeat, and new age that is sure to appeal to fans of artists like Santana, Ottmar Liebert and the Gipsy Kings.

Opening with the title track, things get off to a lively start as a funky syncopated beat and gypsy violin create an intriguing intro leading into a full band laying down a familiar rumba groove. The music is instantly engaging and draws you into its earthy and fiery Afro-Cuban ambience. There was something in the song’s rhythmic pattern and vibe that reminded me slightly of a more up-tempo version of Santana’s hit song “Smooth.” I enjoyed the change-up to the more laid back pace of the next track, entitled “My Ballad Days.” This sultry soundtrack spotlights some tasteful and elegant Spanish guitar playing, and is one of my favorite songs on the album. Arun’s rock influences begin to surface on a hot tune called “Prance,” with a progression that harkens back to his past, yet remains connected to the Latin vibe of the album. I appreciate his sense of composition and dynamics, which can build in intensity, then drop into a more chilled space without missing a beat. There is a wonderful sense of thematic evolution that runs through all of his compositions.

On “The Violin Song,” the Latin air, tinged by slight Celtic traces makes for intriguing alchemy. Another interesting blend is “Sleepy Town,” with its Spanish, Eastern, and folk influences that highlight Arun’s unique musical diversity. “Wanderlust In Keys” is a romp over ever-evolving rhythmic terrain that features some impressive keyboard and guitar work. The ensemble playing on this song, as on the entire album, is incredibly tight and perfectly arranged. I was seriously impressed with Arun’s talents as a musician, composer, arranger, and producer. The music is not only incredibly innovative and extremely well performed, but the recording and production values are first rate. I would also direct the reader to his website for a number of highly creative animated and live action music videos of songs from the album. Whether Arun Shenoy wins the GRAMMY or not, I’m sure that he is someone we’ll be hearing a lot more about in the future, and who will make quite a name for himself in the music industry. Bravo!

"Rumbadoodle" is the Grammy-nominated Best Pop Instrumental Album and the recording debut of Arun Shenoy. It is also the first ever Grammy-nominated album by an artist from Singapore. Very impressive for a first effort! The album started with the idea of putting together a large-scale world fusion project with the Spanish Rumba Flamenco as the underlying theme. Teaming up with musicians from around the world, everyone’s ideas were shared and the musicians co-wrote much of the music in addition to sharing their instrumental talents on the recordings. With artists from Canada, England, The US, Singapore, Pakistan, and India, this is a true melting-pot of musical styles, expanding and dissolving genre boundaries and creating a unique listening experience that is joyful, passionate, and a whole lot of fun. Also known as “Gypsy Rumba,” this music can be played in any key (unlike traditional Flamenco), and works in fusion with many other musical genres - pop, rock, jazz, Eastern, and even Celtic. The 16-page booklet that is included with the CD contains beautiful illustrations for each of the eleven songs as well as info about each track and introductory comments by Arun Shenoy. The cover artwork is outstanding!

"Rumbadoodle" begins with the title track, a joyous piece that features guitars, violin, piano, strings, drums, and bass. The infectious energy of this piece carries through much of the album, causing frequent head bobs and toe-taps. “My Ballad Days” is one of the quieter and more romantic pieces, although it, too, has a really catchy beat. “Prance” is one of my favorites. Guitars, drums, and bass keep the instrumentation fairly simple, but there is plenty of fancy finger-work as well as smoldering passion coming from that guitar! “Fireflies” contrasts smooth, cool darkness (strings and keyboards) with flashing sparks coming from the guitar - lively and in constant motion. “Blue Sky Happiness, Part 1” is kind of dark and slinky with electric guitars in addition to the Flamenco guitar - there is definitely a rock influence here! “Blue Sky Happiness, Part 2” is much more piano-driven and lighter in mood, with a strong beat behind piano, keyboards, and guitar - I like this one a lot, too! “Sleepy Town” has a strong Middle Eastern flavor yet fits right in with the rest of the music. A guitar solo with bits of light percussion for color, it’s a beauty! “Rhythm of the Sun” closes the set with a touch of the blues on piano, guitar, and light percussion - a great way to leave ‘em wanting more!

"Rumbadoodle" is an extraordinary project from several different angles, and the music itself is excellent. Recommended!


Sencillamente colosal!
¿Dónde englobar un álbum que ha estado nominado al Mejor Álbum Pop Instrumental en los premios Grammy, y que además, mezcla géneros como la rumba española, el folk, la música New Age y la World Music?. Difícil, ¿verdad?. Rumbadoodle podríamos decir que es el segundo trabajo del compositor y productor Arun Shenoy, un guitarrista que ya previamente, lanzó algunos EP’s y singles. Arun Shenoy nos descubre una música llena de ritmo, con fuertes reminiscencias españolas, donde la guitarra es el instrumento principal, equilibrando su sonido entre percusiones, sintetizadores, teclados, pianos y algunos violines espectaculares. Rumbadoodle posee una producción sorprendente, juega con los estéreos y muestra unas guitarras españolas magníficas. Poder presenciar un concierto en vivo de Arun Shenoy y su banda es algo que no tiene precio.

La primera pista deja ver el carácter general del álbum. “Rumbadoodle” es una muestra de destreza en diferentes instrumentos, principalmente, guitarras y violines. Con un ritmo sencillamente increíble, Arun Shenoy nos presenta el álbum con un track inmejorable, o al menos, eso pensábamos. Lo que nos espera, es aún mejor!.

En esta segunda pieza, el guitarrista Glenn Sharp directamente, se sale!. “My Ballads Days” es levemente más calmada que la pieza que abría el álbum. Más aflamencada y con una melodía que enamora, esta composición está hecha para ser escuchada con atención. Brillante!.

Continuamos con una guitarra española increíble!. “Prance” mezcla algo de rock con la rumba, una combinación extravagante e interesante al mismo tiempo, donde la guitarra es una incansable, durante cuatro minutos, el artista se deja el alma y el sentimiento en sus rasgueos, punteos y acordes.

Más acústico y relajado, al menos al comienzo, es “Rock And Rigmarole”. Con una producción muy parecida a Yanni, las guitarras y sintetizadores juegan al ritmo de la batería, mientras un par de guitarras eléctricas suenan de fondo. Los violines son fascinantes aquí, algo que sirve perfectamente, como introducción a la siguiente composición.

Una de mis preferidas, “The Violin Song”. Comienzo muy flamenco, rumbero… Cuerpo celta!. Ian Cameron es uno de los mejores violinistas que he escuchado en mucho tiempo, su rápido toque consigue dejar boquiabierto al oyente, además de enamorar con su melodía. Cautivadora pieza!!!.

Rumbadoodle no da un minuto para el descanso, incluso nos aguarda con algunas sorpresas. Es el caso de “Fireflies”, donde se añaden nuevos instrumentos a ese ritmo arrojadizo y lleno de fuerza, el más destacable, un Hammond. Continuamos con el juego de guitarras; la vida de este álbum!.

Dos movimientos, por llamarlos de alguna forma, son las piezas que nos ocupan ahora, “Blue Sky Happiness Part I” y “Blue Sky Happiness Part II”, donde se da más protagonismo a los sintetizadores y a guitarras acústicas y eléctricas. Esta dos composiciones son más apacibles que las anteriores, dejando aparcado la rumba, especialmente en la primera parte. Juntos forman más de nueve minutos que son un paréntesis en Rumbadoodle. Estas dos piezas son de las mejores que podemos encontrar en este CD.

Continuamos con algo extraño con referencia lo escuchado anteriormente. La guitarra clásica es la única protagonista, dejándose llevar por el ritmo de palmas y otras percusiones. Es entretenida, pero no tiene nada que ver con las superproducciones de las pistas anteriores.

Regresa la colosal música que hemos estado disfrutando desde el principio. “Wanderlust In Keys”. Nuevamente, la rumba, pero la guitarra es cambiada por un piano asombroso!!. Entre el jazz, el flamenco… Es un piano diferente y de gran alcance, que caza perfectamente con los ritmos candentes y la energía de la pieza. Magistral!.

Y damos fin al álbum con “Rythm of the Sun”. Sugerentes ritmos, donde unas percusiones marcan el tempo para el piano y la guitarra. Mucho más suave y con un temple atractivo, Arun nos deja un final abierto para Rumbadoodle. Me gusta!.

Y casi sin percatarse, el álbum ha finalizado. “Rumbadoodle” es una sorpresa constante. No os dejéis llevar por el título, no es rumba lo que nos espera. Más bien es una superproducción increíble, donde un gran número de instrumentos realizan una soberbia interpretación y tocan en diferentes géneros al mismo tiempo. Las melodías son interesantes, pero no es lo principal, “Rumbadoodle” ha sido creado para el deleite de los sentidos, disfrutar con sus virtuosos artistas y arrojarnos un buen chorro de optimismo. Sencillamente colosal!.

Indian-Singaporean world music artist Arun Shenoy has achieved something remarkable with his debut album, receiving a Grammy Award nomination on his first try and being the first Singaporean musician to receive a Grammy nomination.

Listening to the CD, it’s no surprise Shenoy has garnered this accolade. The disc contains a festive mix of rhythms and sounds from around the world, with the primary influence being flamenco of the rumba variety.

Starting with his guitar-based compositions, Shenoy has assembled a globetrotting lineup of musicians to bring his musical ideas to vibrant life, with electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards and synthesizers, violin, and drums and percussion.

The result is an engaging microcosm of world fusion that fans of Ottmar Liebert and The Gypsy Kings will eat up.

What can the newest album of Arun Shenoy be compared with? This question was asked not by accident because "Rumbadoodle" is a glittering cocktail of bright melodies which unites various styles into one unique mixture of modern instrumental music. And the flamenco genre is the starting point which masterfully is transformed into the world fusion music.
The word "fusion" is the key because many genres are interlaced into the vivid canvas of the “Rumbadoodle” album. This is a real pleasure to listen to the compositions of Singaporean artist Arun Shenoy. His music is filled with positive and sweet emotions. It inspires the listener to forget everyday worries and to find joy the present moment, to celebrate the continued life.
The music of “Rumbadoodle” has a clear visual aspect. It can be a perfect soundtrack to the motion picture telling authentic stories. Arun Shenoy expresses deep emotional experiences in his music. Unspent passion of the artist’s heart is here, before the listeners. All compositions of “Rumbadoodle” are sensual and heartfelt.
The newest project of Arun Shenoy goes beyond the boundaries of any one style, yet on the other hand it has distinct aesthetics of the XXI Century. So, “Rumbadoodle” can be named as an outstanding debut in the genre of instrumental new age and nuevo flamenco music.
