Album Notes
Aural Elixir is a mostly original, semi-improvisational, multi-genre concept born from the rich musical textures of New Orleans. Aural Elixir was created in 1997 by Jesse Maclaine, an eclectic songstress whose style is somewhat reminiscent of Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, and Thelonious Monk, yet she deftly keeps Aural Elixir evolving and boundless.

"When I decided I wanted to write music, I knew that my songs would be as varied as my musical tastes but I wasn't really sure how to begin. Then when I heard Frank Zappa, I was struck by his expansiveness, inspired by the immense scope of his music, and then I knew that I wanted to model my songwriting style after his." Jesse Maclaine

Jesse was classically trained in piano & voice as a child, and very much surrounded by the music of The Beatles and pop music from the "50's to the present. However, it was the introduction of jazz and the music of both Frank Zappa & Joni Mitchell which caused her to write her first song in a college band circa 1993.

On "Love & Grappling," Jesse Maclaine (composer, singer, pianist, bandleader) is accompanied by the wonderfully gifted & talented Jim Ankar (bass), the innovative & hilarious Tim Robertson (electric guitar), the extraordinary & daring Lynn Drury (vocals, acoustic guitar) and youngest but not least, a swinging-groovemaking monster, Dylan "Sticks" Hicks (drums). All mastered & melded by eclectic engineering genius, Chris Munson.

It comes as no surprise to hear songs from "Love & Grappling" played on radio stations worldwide!

The brief story behind Love & Grappling:

Five New Orleans musicians made their way to Nashville in 2 cars & often playing Yahtzee! in the summer of 1999 to record their first CD. Although it was an honor to record in the historic, world-reknowned RCA Studio B (previously used by Dolly Parton and even Elvis, the King himself!) their attitude was all business. They recorded a whole 12-song album in 2 short days, and a year later performed at the historic Tipitina's in NOLA for the CD Release party!

A few months later, Lynn & Jesse went on the first Aural Elixir tour across America, "Girls Only." Then in 2001 another cross country tour took Aural Elixir to Oregon for the recording of Anomaly, New Orleans Style (with Chris Munson engineering again), their second CD (and second national tour) with the same lineup as the first (minus Tim Robertson the electric guitarist). That was all very thrilling and dramatic...we'll talk later.

Strange, fun, dance and thought provoking; I love it!
She is THE Modern Day Songwriter ! The songs are so unusual sounding but fun to listen to and even more fun to sing along with( if you can figure out all the words). They all tell different stories but the album just plays itself and when it ends I can't help but play it again! Her voice is so pure and sweet and then dark and ferocious; I've never heard anyone who sings like Miss Holt. Phenomenal! Even when the subject matter is a bit of a "downer" the music has a great bounce to it which makes this CD perfect for party music or even just chillin' out. I recommend this CD to anyone looking for some truly NEW music.
