Album Notes
AVATAAR is a Toronto-based World-jazz group led by award-winning and multiple Juno-nominated saxophonist/composer/vocalist Sundar Viswanathan. The music marries Hindustani raag and taal, hardbop jazz, Brazilian lyricism, electronica, atmospheric textures and ambiance, Javanese gamelan, and contemporary improvisation. The resulting confluence is a mesmerizing blend of rhythmic hypnotism, sonic landscapes and soaring melody that marries ancient and modern musical influences. The new sound includes vocalist Felicity Williams (Bahamas, Hobson's Choice), tabla maestro Ravi Naimpally (Tasa, Kiran Ahluwalia), guitarist Michael Occhipinti (Sicilian Jazz Project, Don Byron, Bruce Cockburn), bassist Justin Gray (Monsoon, David Liebman, Subanker Banarjee) and drummer Giampaolo Scatozza (Paul Young, Tom Jones ). AVATAAR has appeared at the Markham Jazz Festival, Small World Festival, the Brampton Jazz Festival, the Sudbury Jazz Festival, the Lula Lounge and several other venues and together represent a cross-section of some of Canada's finest World, Jazz and Pop artists.

'Petal' is Avataar's debut (Oct. 2015) release; the innovative original music draws from jazz, world, ambient and groove influences. Cleverly layered and cinematic in scope, the music drives and swirls through a vast sonic palette. The album is questing in nature - the concepts of impermanence and universal consciousness feature in many of the compositions, as do first-rate musical interpretations and improvisations by the band's members.

Sundar Viswanathan has shared the world stage with national and international artists alike. He has performed extensively in Europe (including stints with the Grammy-nominated Charles Tolliver Big Band at several Jazz Festivals), Japan, Brazil, South Africa, Canada, the Caribbean, and the USA. Musical associations from Jazz and World music arenas include Wynton Marsalis, Vijay Iyer, Kenny Wheeler, Jaffa Road, Lee Konitz, Dave Holland, Marcus Roberts Trio, Kiran Ahluwalia, Rez Abbasi, John Abercrombie, Suba Sankaran, Terry Clarke, George Cables, Joe Lovano, John Hicks, Cecil McBee, Billy Hart, Jim McNeeley, Hip Hop artist GURU, and Dave Douglas.

Press Quotes:

“Sundar's music is clearly a spiritual search for unity amidst the variety of forces that flow through life... Like Hilario Duran, Sundar plays from his roots, but extends his search into the multicultural mix that many of us call jazz.” David Fujino, LIVE MUSIC REPORT

“Experience truly stimulating contemporary world jazz here… Sundar's alto has a distinctive, edgy sound that often thrills with its imaginative ideas and crafty shape-shifting contours.” Geoff Chapman, TORONTO STAR

“All of the musicians gave outstanding performances…each in his own time and way explored the possibilities of his unconventional instrumentation in a way that synthesized his cultural experiences and influences…” Gerry Labelle, NORTHERN LIFE

A musical journey....
This album beautifully flows from beginning to end. Every note is thoughtfully chosen and accounted for resulting in a wonderful musical journey for the listener. Whether you are looking for melodies to soothe, invigorate, calm or refresh you - they can all be found here. Thank you for the experience!

Hypnotic soothing sounds!
Petal is Avataar's finest work yet! The style of this album is very unique and captivating. The blend of indo jazz showcased seems to flow very naturally. Unlike other genre blend albums I've heard, nothing seems forced in Petal. The music finds a common balance and emerges as its own sound, which is very soothing to listen to.

Blend of Two worlds
Petal, an album that you must have in your collection! Each song has a captivating introduction and the music is imaginative and original. The songs really take you on an exciting Indo-jazz journey with a blend of both worlds in a tasteful composition. It produces a sense of calm and listening to the instrumental variety and complexity showcases the artist’s talent and skill. Two big thumbs up for Avataar!

2 year daughter danced in the car
I was blown away by the imagery the songs captured. My daughter danced to all the songs and asked for it "again again again". I really liked the use of the voice as an instrument through the tracks. Keep up the good work. Hope to hear more from the artists.
