Album Notes
delving into the raw spirit of sound, an iconoclastic development where jazz is but a hint, and theme is the real master.

the avi granite:5 'bring it' in every way possible. from a spanish hit-man to surf-rock and back, in one track~ Hortez the Chihuahua is the hit single which spans these great intervals of thought. there is a sense of humor about it, but there is an even greater sense of hitting the root. the root of being, the sheer consciousness of these musicians is present in every moment. the grace of breath, a circular sound. you will feel it... you will feel it burning with life, or as they put it:

roasting your tats with the fury of a banshee!

avi granite:5 - the self titled debut release on pet mantis records is made up of 3 studio tracks and 2 live tracks recorded at the rex in toronto. The CD features Fraser Calhoun (alto saxophone), Tom Richards (trombone), Avi Granite (electric guitar), Neal Davis (double bass), Kevin Brow (drums) and guest on track 5 Jon Kay (tenor saxophone).

The songs span dark passages to cerebral celebrations, undulating with groove and trancelike meditations.

"The self-titled debut CD from electric guitarist Granite's band shows off catchy hooks, complex riffs, big dynamic shifts, thoughtful soloing, undulating rhythm, dense ensembles — in short, it's a group-in-progress you'll want to check out live. Granite, who composed the five pieces, is joined by trombonist Tom Richards, bass Neal Davis and drummer Kevin Brow with reed duties shared by Fraser Calhoun and Jon Kay. Best track? The wonky "Hortez the Chihuahua." -Geoff Chapman Toronto Star

I have been around jazz my whole life, listenin with pops to playin myself. I am really feelin this. Well Let me get back to chillin.

very strong writing and equally fine playing
This is a disc of clean crisp lines, tight arrangements, and tasty blowing. There's lots of fresh creative stuff here, and it stands as a good example of freedom's ability to thrive within set limits.

incredibly talented musicians
Old school jazz with dirty horns and distored guitars. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this is thinking man’s jazz. Or even better, jazz for the stoner in you. But no matter what you call it, guitarist Avi Granite and his band are incredibly talented musicians.

Fraser Calhoun is the star of this show
Fraser's talent shines through on this album. He is only featured on a few tracks, but they are by far the strongest of the album. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the band is awesome and the arrangements are mind-blowing and definitely create the perfect backbone for this work. But Fraser Calhoun is a star and on this album, we can see exactly why.

insanely mind bending modern jazz
This is the most inspiring modern Jazz album I have heard in the last 10 years. Mixing a blend of new and old, Avi Granite has composed a timeless masterpiece that is a must have for any serious modern jazz lover.

An Auditory Epic! Highly Recommended
In this latest CD, Avi Granite has created an evolving landscape for the ears. The music is varied and entrancing. It is the type of CD that you can listen to over and over, and give as a gift. I was fortunate to have been at the CD release and to actually hear the depth of talent these guys possess- live. Young, Hot, Talented, Incredible! To hear music that you don’t get bored of and that is intelligent is exciting. Thanks for the creativity and stimulation.
