ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
PUZZLED (EP) is the product of a collaboration between Bad Salad, South-Korean keyboardist Junghwan Kim, and great supportive fans.

After having successfully toured with Junghwan Kim in Brazil in support of "Uncivilized" (2012), Bad Salad thought it would be a cool idea to invite him back in 2013 to write and record new music together. We wanted it to be a live experience rather than an internet collaboration, with all members writing together inside a rehearsal room. The time Junghwan had reserved to stay in Brazil was limited so Bad Salad decided that the project would consist of a 3-song EP + videos for each song.

To make the experience even more special Bad Salad decided to get the fans involved by setting up a crowdfunding project on 'Pledge Music' and offering a bunch of exclusive packages for those who wanted to directly support and follow the progress of the EP. At that time the project was named "Summer Salad 2013", and it quickly reached its funding goal and was ready to launch!

A few months later and here we are with "PUZZLED". A lot of care was put into this album, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did this whole crazy international musical experience! It's been quite a ride and we're really glad to finally share these songs with you!

Musically,
Bad Salad

Progressive Gem
My listening to this band goes back to when they were first making their debut album and the only track i had heard was Nemesis. It was at that point i realized this band is a hidden progressive gem. They are absolutely shy of the attention they deserve, their skills and chops are enough to de-testosteronize any player and a progressive sound which they have managed to mature and master in a matter of an album. This sounds a lot like a dream theater review but honestly the boundaries and level of prog has been highly polished, refined and pushed to the limits by this band and hence they deserve a class of their own within proggers.

The EP is very mature in terms of its dynamics, song structure and flow, as well as composition coherency to allow a smooth over wash of the emotions it is trying to portray. Instrumental music is at an all time high and the classic progressive metal formula has been very craftily applied. Moments like the end of "Pain that binds us" and the instrumental section in "deep roots" stand out as absolute epics highlights. The vocals are very smooth and versatile, almost reminiscent of a rock singing version of Bruce Dickinson. They guitar is rich and creamy, specially in the mellower middle song "Moonlight" and flow perfectly with the keyboards to support the song structures through the play. The bass has been given special attention from being a smooth liquid-ey flow like in "Moonlight" to a more distorted metallic heavy torque thrust like in "Deep roots". They keyboards sound phenomenal, grand and empowering, particularly during the instrumental section of "deep roots" or the massive atmosphere they create in "Pain that binds us" . The drums are spot on like clockwork and just balanced to prevent them from being over powering, while having the thorough-bred form to remain in flow with the emotions of the song and not prance on them with time signatures.

Overall this is a piece of progressive gem that is well beyond its age and a must listen for any progressive metal fan! amazing amazing work. I highly recommend this as well as their previous albums!

Great composition balance!
A bought this album few days ago. After listening it for while, I'm really fascinated with it. This is one of those album that you can say "This is a great no boring prog-piece". I say "no boring" because there's a lot of new prog-rock/metal music that turns boring after a couple of plays. But Puzzled is really melodic piece, and I feel 3 moments (for each song): First, the middle-melodic-prog song; second, the ballad-melodic-prog song, and third, the potent-melodic song.

Thanks Bad Salad for this EP. I really love it.
