Tight Connection

by Baluja and Small

This CD represents the collaborative efforts of two artists who have never personally met. Their alliance began online in 2013, on a site called Reverbnation. Mitchell Small, a lyricist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who is also known as Songs Unsung, and Mike Baluja, a songwriter from Tampa, Florida, who goes by his last name, seem to have found a formula for creating some very interesting songs...songs with historical value as well as social significance, sprinkled with some lighthearted sarcasm and irony.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The twelve songs on this CD were written, recorded, and produced in 2013 and 2014. The music and melodies are simple and direct, and designed to place emphasis on the lyrics. The same can be said of the vocals, which strive for clarity and conviction. These are songs that you can relate to the first time that you hear them, and that continue to grow on you with each subsequent listen. What sets them apart from all the great music that you are exposed to is the writing and the impact of delivery. With so many talented artists vying for your attention, it's very easy to overlook the few who have something meaningful to say. Don't let this moment pass you by. Let "Tight Connection" give you something worth remembering.

Here's are some listener reactions:

I've noted this before and I will do it again. This guy is one of the most talented songwriters on this site or anywhere else Plus he can sing! He has a soulful gritty voice that was built for rock and roll. Everyone should listen to TIGHT CONNECTION

Mike Baluja & Small, impressive work of words and music. Love how you deliver such great songs, direct kind of Desolation Row/New York atmosphere, fantastic phrasing, these messages of pain and freedom. End Times is masterpiece. Right Unprotected is so well performed and necessary. Congrats...

Brief Song Summaries

Rights Unprotected considers the basic rights provided by free nations and the US Constitution, including the 2nd Amendment. It ask the listener to consider who is, and who is not, protected.

For the Sake of the Fifty explores the intrinsic value of the many, the few, and the one, providing a biblical perspective on a snowy night’s concert.

Single Bullet Theory A theory that I have, maybe true, perhaps I’m mad. A single bullet shot with skill,
watch out, I think it’s flying still!

End Times We got problems only rapture and your donations solve.

Rocket A rocket is launched and its mission is revealed only as the song builds towards its climax. Who and what will the rocket find when it lands?

Tight Connection When you fly, a tight connection is always risky business. Even more so when you fly coach.

Unthinkable Thoughts burn through my mind, with vision a prisoner no longer confined. Conclusions deduced, all drawn for naught. Ideas unthinkable until the moment they're finally thought.

Nowhere to Land Three doves of ancient, recent, and current history soar to the heavens, but find nowhere to land.

Rhyme Without Rhythm A tone-deaf troubadour takes his place on stage and mimes his solo part, but the melody he senses beats only in his heart.

My Mountaintop A higher view of mountaintop mining.

Message Unread I’ll catch you one day in your flight, as we approach the speed of light. But till that day my windows say, this message is unread.

A Single Drop of Rain A 1000-year history of the Mississippi River as seen through the eyes of a single drop of rain. Provides the listener with a solid foundation in meteorology, geohydrology, anthropology, seismology, Civil Warology, and Elvisology.

Baluja... Real songs are alive and well
In this age of sanitized radio and music as a commodity, it's pure delight to find artists like Baluja who compose, perform and record music of such heartfelt clarity. What most impresses me about this music - beyond the profound song craft - is the unique appeal of Baluja's voice and the spot on arrangements. In some ways, I think of him as a modern day Sixto Rodriguez. Instrumentation serves the song, humbly and effectively, while keeping the focus on the core melody. The songs are easy to relate to: you can absorb Baluja's world and insert his lyrical images into your own experiences. The greatest singer-songwriters create this sense of listener participation, and this makes Tight Connection more than an album. It takes you on a journey all your own.

Like nobody else!!!
One of the most intriguing things is that "Tight Connection" album sounds authentic, doesn't remind me of any band or song including vocals color and its delivery.

Listening to this work by Mike Baluja and Small you feel you are in your room or walking around, no matter which town or country you live. You feel the real thing. Raw powerful sounds, astonishing delivery by the great voice of Mike Maluja, words telling you what's going on in the world, far from mainstreams, close to the ones whose lives are the hidden heart of the cities and its beating the reason we keep on keeping on. Excellent!

Tight Connection - Baluja and Small
I know Mike Baluja although, I've never met him. I grew up in Tampa with Baluja. Felt the same winds, ate the same foods, listened to the same radio stations and heard the same songs played live by musical giants.
Tight Connection is an album not to be missed. This albums shines and should be a classic from Tampa’s finest citizen and musician. The stories told, music played; is raw, played well, polished, profound and as good as it gets.
