ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This album presents an interesting moment in the history of 20th century American music. Contemporary music, post WWII was often very atonal and abstract. Written by composers who had experienced WWII and who were trying to come to terms with that experience through their music, music that was dissonant, difficult, and reflective of the times. Starting in the 1980's as the next generation of composers were finding their voice, and including for the first time, a significant number of women composers, American composers started writing in a more accessible, tonal and melodic style. At the time these composers were not accepted as they were writing in what was considered an out-moded and antiquated style from the past. But they had had different experiences, less traumatic in most cases, and so their musical language reflected their experiences. Their music is more tranquil, melodic, tonal and accessible. Of Water and Clouds is a collection of music by some of these composers at the beginning of their successsful careers. It is a recording of music that is part of a transitional moment in conemporary American music, because since the mid 1980's music has become more accessible, melodic, and open to many differing styles. To me, it started at this point in time and I hope you enjoy hearing these beautiful works for flute and piano.
